On the morning they left Maidenpool, a gray haze hung over the direction of Crab Claw Peninsula.

Daemon Blackfyre reined in his horse and glanced back at the steam rising from Qiongqi Spring, where the hot springs seemed to still whisper of Jaehaerys and Alysanne's past.

Gael rode Dreamfyre in low circles behind Glutton, while Mysaria's platinum curls spilled from behind the dragon saddle like a strand of silk lifted by the wind.

"Can't you ride Glutton, Daemon?" Gael's voice drifted down on the wind. "Count Simon's messenger said early this morning that he's waiting at Rook's Rest."

Daemon nodded and flicked the reins. The party followed the coastal road east.

Rook's Rest stood among the hills on the northern shore of Blackwater Bay, looking from afar like a crow with its wings folded.

The banner of House Staunton flew atop its towers, its black-and-gray checks and white ribbon bearing black wings snapping in the wind.

Count Simon Staunton was already waiting beneath the castle gates. He was younger than Daemon had imagined, with a straight back, eyes carved sharp as blades, and a gaze as piercing as a hawk studying its prey.

His wife, Lady Staunton, stood beside him in a neat gray dress, a gentle smile upon her face.

"Welcome, Prince Daemon, Princess Gael." Count Simon's voice was somewhat hoarse, but sincere. "Rook's Rest is humble. I hope Your Highnesses will not find it lacking."

"You are too courteous, my lord." Daemon swung down from his horse, Blackfyre's scabbard tapping softly against the paving stones. "It is our honor to rest at your castle."

After they entered the castle, Count Simon specifically showed them the room where Princess Daenella had once stayed before marrying into the Vale.

A faded tapestry still hung on the wall, depicting the tale of a former attendant and a young maiden. "Princess Daenella and I, back then..." The count's voice lowered, touched by wistfulness. "She was Lady Aemma's mother. As His Majesty's attendant, I used to sneak off with the princess to drink. Once, His Majesty caught us and punished us by making us copy the Prayer to the Seven a hundred times. The princess even said she would never speak to me again..."

He smiled, and tears unknowingly welled in the corners of his eyes. "We were young and foolish. Back then, I always thought Princess Daenella was a star in the heavens, forever beyond my reach."

"Your Highness resembles your sister very much. You both possess the bright radiance of the Targaryen Lineage." He looked at Gael, a trace of tenderness passing through his eyes.

Gael's cheeks reddened slightly. "Thank you, my lord."

At the evening feast, Count Simon took the initiative to speak of the situation on Crab Claw Peninsula, where the party was headed. His tone was grave. "That place has never been peaceful. House Bren and House Crabb are locked in open and secret conflict, and there are quite a few Wildlings as well. They are an even greater nuisance." He filled Daemon's cup. "Your Highness must be careful on this journey."

Daemon nodded his thanks. He knew of the chaos on Crab Claw Peninsula. Those petty lords who ruled their own corners of land were all as stubborn and belligerent as crabs.

Early the next morning, the party left Rook's Rest. Count Simon insisted on seeing them to the gates, and before they departed, he pressed a ruby-studded dagger into Daemon's hand. "His Majesty rewarded me with this when I was young. They say it wards off evil. Take it with you, Your Highness. It may help you escape danger."

Daemon accepted the dagger and bowed solemnly. The party spurred their horses onward along the coastal road toward Crab Claw Peninsula.

Since leaving King's Landing, this count was the only one who had not tried to push someone into his company...

The closer they came to Crab Claw Peninsula, the rougher the roads became. The trees on either side grew sparse, replaced by bare rock and thick brambles.

Several evenings later, they finally reached Dyre Den. The seat of House Bren stood upon towering cliffs by the sea. Its three crooked towers leaned against one another like drunkards, while dark green vines crawled over the walls.

Count Bren had already received word and came with his family to greet them at the castle gates. "Welcome, Prince Daemon." Count Bren was a burly man, with a scar running from his forehead to his chin. "Dyre Den is poorly appointed. I fear Your Highness will be inconvenienced."

"There is no need for such ceremony, my lord." Daemon smiled. "To build a castle in such treacherous terrain is proof enough of House Bren's resilience."

Count Bren laughed heartily. "Your Highness flatters us. We are merely rough men making a living beside these cliffs."

The feast was simple but plentiful: roasted boar, stewed clams, black bread, and home-brewed ale. Count Bren's wife was a quiet woman who silently refilled cups and served dishes, while their son was deeply curious about the followers Daemon had brought. He pestered Rayford with question after question.

Late that night, Daemon stood at the cliff's edge, listening to the waves crash against the rocks.

Gael quietly came to stand beside him. "What are you thinking about?"

"Count Simon's words." Daemon looked out over the dark sea. "Crab Claw Peninsula truly is no simple place."

"Don't overthink it." Gael leaned against his shoulder. "We still have a long road ahead tomorrow." Daemon took her hand, feeling the warmth in her palm.

Memories of his previous life surged forth like a tide. War, betrayal, death... they made him cherish this moment of peace all the more. Yet the peace of the past few days did not last long.

At dawn the next day, while the sky was only beginning to brighten, hurried hoofbeats sounded outside the castle.

Daemon awoke with a start, threw on his clothes, and went to the window. He saw a knight tumble from his horse and stagger toward the castle gates.

"I am Lubert Crabb!" the knight cried hoarsely, his voice close to tears. "I need to see Prince Daemon and Count Bren! Quickly!"

Daemon's heart tightened, and he hurried downstairs. Lubert Crabb knelt in the center of the hall, his armor covered in dust and blood, his face filled with terror. "Prince Daemon, please save us!"

"What happened?" Daemon asked in a low voice. "Wildlings! It's the Wildlings!" Lubert's voice trembled. "They have occupied Whispering Castle, our family's abandoned stronghold, and are using it as a base to attack our town! My father and elder brother are resisting them, but we don't have enough men. We won't be able to hold out much longer!"

Count Bren arrived after hearing the news, his expression grim. "Whispering Castle? That place has been abandoned for years. How could Wildlings have taken it?"

"I don't know!" Lubert shook his head. "They appeared at Whispering Castle out of nowhere, as though they had sprung from the ground. The terrain there is dangerous, easy to defend and hard to attack. We cannot storm it." He looked at Daemon, his eyes full of pleading. "Your Highness, my uncle is Ser Clymon Clegane of the Kingsguard. He wrote to us some time ago and said that you were the bravest prince of the Targaryen Lineage. Please, show mercy and save House Crabb!"

Daemon fell silent for a moment. He knew Whispering Castle. It was an ancient ruin on Crab Claw Peninsula, standing atop a cliff, and legends claimed it was even haunted. If Wildlings had seized it as a base, it would indeed be a serious problem. "My lord," Daemon said, looking to Count Bren, "are you familiar with Whispering Castle?"

Count Bren nodded. "I have been there a few times. The place is truly perilous. The castle was built from ancient unmortared stone and is extremely sturdy. Though the cliffside walls have partly collapsed, the main towers remain intact." He paused. "The greatest problem is that the sea has eroded many hollows beneath the cliffs. When the waves pass through them, they make strange sounds that leave people unable to tell which direction they are facing."

Daemon looked at Rayford and his other followers. "Are you willing to come with me?"

Rayford stepped forward without hesitation. "Wherever Your Highness goes, we go!"

The other young men responded in turn, excitement gleaming in their eyes.

Daemon nodded and said to Lubert, "Get up. We will go and see." He turned to Gael. "You stay here and wait for word from me."

But Gael shook her head. "I'm coming with you. Dreamfyre may be able to help."

Daemon considered it, then nodded his agreement. He looked at Count Bren. "My lord, please watch over Mysaria and our baggage."

Count Bren bowed. "Rest assured, Your Highness. I will bring my men to support you at once."

Before long, Daemon set out for Whispering Castle with Rayford, more than twenty young men, guards, and attendants, following Lubert. Gael rode Dreamfyre overhead to provide cover, the magnificent dragon's shadow casting a patch of shade over the rugged mountain road. Glutton followed silently behind the party, ready to breathe dragonfire at any moment.

Along the way, Lubert told Daemon more about Whispering Castle. "There is a Godswood there. Though it has long been abandoned, the Heart Tree remains. Beneath the cliffs is a huge cave said to lead into the castle, but no one has ever dared enter it."

Daemon listened in silence, gradually forming a general picture of Whispering Castle in his mind. He knew this would be a difficult battle.

As the sun rose higher, the mist over Crab Claw Peninsula dispersed, revealing jagged rocks and raging waves. The outline of Whispering Castle emerged atop the cliffs ahead. Its ancient stones gleamed blue-gray beneath the sunlight, while weeds and red poison vines twisted around its walls like tattered clothing.

Daemon reined in his horse and stared at the abandoned castle, a sense of foreboding rising in his heart. He knew that a bloody battle was about to unfold upon this desolate land.
