Background / History

Glutton was an ancient, feared dragon of Dragonstone, known for its savagery and for rarely appearing in public. It had reportedly not roared for ten years before its cries shook Dragonstone after Daemon Blackfyre’s arrival. Rumors held that it fed on dragon corpses, while witnesses recalled it biting the arms from three dragonriders and treating Dragonpit guards’ bones as food 6 9.

Daemon’s black three-headed dragon brand resonated with Glutton’s roar, causing severe pain and a shared heartbeat-like connection. Held apart from the other dragons, Glutton circled Dragonstone as though searching for Daemon, whom he came to view as a fellow prisoner bearing a brand 6.

In the caverns beneath Dragonstone, Glutton confronted the twelve-year-old Daemon. Rather than flee, Daemon appealed to the dragon’s experience of confinement; Glutton ultimately lifted him with a foreclaw and accepted him onto its back. Their first flight became an aerial contest with Caraxes, establishing Daemon as Glutton’s rider 8 9.

After choosing Daemon, Glutton became unusually cooperative around its rider and joined Targaryen campaigns against the Triarchy, the Stone Crows, the Wildlings of Crab Claw Peninsula, and the Mountain Clans of the Vale 11 24 38 50.

Glutton’s power also became a target of foreign political interest. Dornish envoys proposed a marriage alliance for Daemon, ostensibly seeking peace while attempting to gain access to his dragon and divide the Targaryens. They provoked Glutton with Dragonbreath Grass mixed among flower petals, but Jaehaerys emphasized that the dragon now recognized only Daemon as its master 15.

During Daemon’s tour of Westeros, Glutton served as transport, escort, and a deterrent against hostile lords and pirates. It helped repel Ironborn attacks at Seagard and Lannisport, although the latter battle continued through the night and left both Glutton and Dreamfyre exhausted 47 73 76 96 115.

At Oldtown, the Citadel’s detailed knowledge of Glutton’s fire and growth aroused Daemon’s suspicions. Its records described sickly green dragonfire, whereas Glutton’s flames had become black after bonding with him. Daemon identified the changed flames as Soul-Burning Deathfire and recognized that their connection was also strengthening his own body. Later reports stated that the Citadel had searched ancient Valyrian texts without finding a precedent for the dragon’s changes 110 208.

Glutton initially regarded Grey Ghost as an intruder and had previously attempted to prey upon the timid wild dragon. After Daemon welcomed Grey Ghost into his household, the two dragons gradually became companions, flying together in the renewed Stepstones campaign and resting beside one another 120 121 168 175.

Following the war against the Triarchy, Glutton supported the consolidation of Daemon’s domain. It helped subdue the cannibals of Black Hill, destroy Bloodtooth Pyke’s raiders at Stony Bay, and secure the shipping routes around Dragon’s Roost Port. Daemon subsequently promised it a permanent, comfortable home there with Dreamfyre and the other dragons 196 216 241.

By the time Daemon openly resolved to establish an empire, his bond with Glutton no longer depended on the dragon brand as an intermediary. Glutton answered his proclamation with a roar and a display of black dragonfire above Dragon’s Roost Port. It later carried him back to King’s Landing, landing outside the Red Keep amid public cheers 220 221 244 245.

Appearance

Glutton is an immense black dragon whose presence is repeatedly compared to an abyss or living obsidian. Its folded wings nearly cover half a cavern, and its shadow can engulf entire military formations 8 50.

• Pitch-black scales with a dark metallic sheen; its scales can appear dark purple in morning light 24 39.

Glutton continues to grow despite its ancient age. A Citadel maester who had examined its scales claimed that it grew thirty percent faster than an ordinary dragon. After the renewed Stepstones war, an observer noted that it had become even more robust 110 198.

Personality

Before accepting a rider, Glutton was regarded as violently untamable. Its reputation for maiming riders, consuming guards’ remains, and possibly devouring other dragons made even Prince Baelon and Corlys Velaryon wary of it 6 9 10.

Glutton responds strongly to Daemon Blackfyre’s dragon brand and emotional state. It reacted to his recognition of their shared imprisonment with pain rather than immediate violence, then allowed him to ride. It later became notably calm beneath Daemon’s direction, though its natural hunger and capacity for destruction remained apparent in battle 8 14 24.

Its attachment to Daemon includes physical affection and sensitivity to his moods. At Ramsford, it growled uneasily and rubbed its head against his arm; during a later flight to King’s Landing, it sensed his turmoil and steadied its flight. As their connection deepened, Glutton’s anger and ambition came to mirror its rider’s 72 220 244.

Glutton remains territorial, possessive of food, and capable of impatience. It warned Daemon when Grey Ghost entered its territory, initially resented being ordered away from the smaller dragon, and later stole mutton Dreamfyre had dropped. Nevertheless, it became tolerant of familiar companions: it permitted Mund Hightower to stroke its scales and eventually allowed Grey Ghost to curl beside its claws and neck 111 120 121 175 241.

Its behavior outside battle can be curious or relaxed. While traveling through the Reach, it slowed and brushed its snout against roadside broom flowers. It also displayed clear enjoyment while catching fish cooked by dragonfire over the sea 100 121.

Their effects are not described solely as ordinary combustion: during the Stone Crow massacre, the flames silently extinguished life and reduced victims to ash. Mysaria later described the victims at Lannisport as appearing to have their souls frozen and set ablaze, emphasizing the unnatural chill accompanying the fire 24 110.
