History

Targaryen Rule and Exile

Before the novel’s opening, House Targaryen ruled Westeros from the Iron Throne. The dynasty fell during the War of the Usurper after Rhaegar Targaryen was defeated and killed by Robert Baratheon at the Battle of the Trident. The dragon banner was replaced by the crowned stag, marking the end of Targaryen rule 26 36.

King’s Landing was subsequently sacked by Lannister forces. Many royalists were killed, forced to join the Night’s Watch, or driven across the Narrow Sea. House Rykker of Duskendale was among the royalist families that survived in exile 8 26.

Baratheon Rule

By Conquest Era 290, Robert Baratheon’s authority appeared secure. The coalition of the wolf, stag, fish, eagle, and lion had recently defeated Balon Greyjoy and stood at the height of its power 8.

The alliance nevertheless contained internal tensions. Robert’s realm had been divided among King’s Landing, Storm’s End, and Dragonstone, while ambitious figures and rival family interests threatened its stability 8. Viserys regarded these divisions as future opportunities for a Targaryen restoration 37.

Remaining Royalists

The surviving royalist families had lost much of their land, wealth, and military strength after the Targaryen defeat. Their territories were scattered rather than forming one continuous power base 8.
