Background

Viserys is a fourteen-year-old Targaryen prince living in exile at Braavos’s Red Door House under Ser Willem Darry’s protection. Six years after fleeing King’s Landing, he faces imminent ruin when the household servants plan to steal Darry’s funds after the old knight’s death. 1 3

Several months before the story begins, the soul of a college student from the Blue Star merges with Viserys’s own. The resulting Viserys retains the prince’s identity and memories while possessing unusual maturity, perfect recall, and knowledge of events yet to come. 1 2 8

His early martial education was severely neglected. King Aerys restricted his childhood movements, while Ser Willem became half-blind and partially paralyzed after the exile, leaving Viserys with little practical weapons training despite a noble education in Valyrian, history, mathematics, etiquette, and horsemanship. 2 3

When Darry’s death approaches, Viserys and Rhaenys use Bloodspot Mushrooms to poison the servants before they can rob and expel the three Targaryen children. He inherits Darry’s hidden funds, but finds that the proposed Dornish marriage agreement has been destroyed; he chooses to pursue restoration rather than hide his identity or flee from the Iron Throne. 4 5
