"What's going on? Why did this Spiritual Light suddenly appear in my heart, letting me read commentaries on the classics? Are these writings real or fake?"
Jiannan Circuit, An Prefecture.
Liu Ying, a scholar who had been writing an essay, was staring blankly into space.
Had outsiders been present and seen his absent-minded appearance, they would have assumed he was distracted. In truth, Liu Ying was following a spark of Spiritual Light in his mind, browsing layer upon layer of information on the classics!
Most of these commentaries came from Confucianism's canonical texts, with a small portion belonging to the Military School. There were also some texts from the Legalist School, Mohist School, and Daoism. The profound meaning of Knowledge and Action ran through them all. As long as he focused his mind and silently read with care, he could experience the feeling of the classics stretching like an ocean within the Spiritual Light in his mind!
A few breaths ago, the change had come abruptly. The surging flood of classical texts had made Liu Ying's heart blossom with joy, leaving him unable to contain himself! Yet after that instinctive ecstasy came doubt, worry, and a thread of panic!
Liu Ying had heard of such situations in legendary storybooks. They described ignorant scholars whose minds were bewitched by ghosts and fox demons, their hidden desires drawn forth, until they met miserable ends.
The more he thought about it, the more frightened Liu Ying became. Yet he discovered that although the commentaries flowing from the Spiritual Light in his mind were unfamiliar and things he had never encountered, studying them revealed profound principles that did not seem fabricated. More than that, those insights cited classics and sources. If he concentrated and investigated, the quoted passages—and even the books from which they
