Power Progression

Pokémon have ranked strength levels, but individuals advance at different rates. These are documented milestones, not a progression shared by every Pokémon 280 834.

Aptitude and Strength

• The listed aptitude ranks, from lowest to highest, are White, Green, Blue, Purple, Orange, Red, and Gold. Black aptitude is later observed in exceptionally powerful Pokémon, including Hoopa Unbound and Ash’s Pikachu 2 778 876.
• Aptitude can be measured with instruments, though appraisal is expensive. It does not determine a battle’s outcome by itself: Trainer commands, coordination, and rapport also matter 2 63.
• Crobat began with Orange Aptitude yet grew stronger than Lu Ze initially expected; Wang Yi’s Purple Aptitude Gengar reached Master level 450 1186.
• Pokémon strength classifications are rough estimates because Pokémon possess strong willpower. A breakthrough from Senior to Elite Four level cannot be achieved through hard training alone 280 834.

Eggs and Evolution

• Trainers can choose Pokémon Eggs at stores. Egg cloud patterns sometimes suggest a Pokémon’s type, but they are not a reliable identification method in every case 27 83.
• Evolution may occur through growth or require particular items or conditions. Documented examples include Elekid evolving into Electabuzz, Seadra requiring a Dragon Scale to evolve into Kingdra, and certain trade evolutions requiring a held item 95 157 334.
• Mega Evolution requires a Pokémon’s corresponding Mega Stone, a Trainer’s Key Stone, and a sufficiently strong bond between them 597.
• Energy released by Arceus Plates can improve an Egg’s mastery of the Plate’s attribute. Deoxys observes that Eggs absorb this energy more effectively than hatched Pokémon; Electivire’s exposure to the Earth Plate as an Egg helped it learn and strengthen Ground-type moves 842.

Abilities and Battle Skills

Abilities

• Abilities can shape a Pokémon’s battle role: Torkoal’s Drought brings Sunny Day upon entering battle, while Zubat’s Infiltrator lets it attack through barriers and Substitute 2 15.
• A Pokémon’s Ability can change upon Mega Evolution. Mega Absol, for example, has Magic Bounce, which reflects certain status moves 659.

Moves and Training

• Pokémon can learn moves through practice, TMs, inheritance, or instruction from another Pokémon. Kommo-o teaches Munchlax punching moves, while Lu Ze shops for TMs for Golbat and Munchlax 15 55.
• Learning a move does not guarantee proficiency. Whimsicott gains moves on evolving but still needs to practise them before using them effectively in battle 844.
• Training and battle both contribute to improvement. Lu Ze combines tailored Energy Cubes with training and regular battles to support his Pokémon’s growth 1205.

Care and Held Items

• Pokémon are individuals with their own emotions and preferences. Lu Ze argues that catching one means committing time to its training, care, and companionship 416.
• An international convention forbids abandoning Pokémon, with severe penalties 2.
• Energy Cubes can serve different purposes, including nutrition, physical conditioning, stamina recovery, and energy recovery 5 450.
• Held items affect battles or development: Charcoal strengthens Fire-type moves, Life Orb has a stamina cost, and a Training Vest improves physical fitness through training and battle 446 696.
• A Speed Secret Treasure improves the corresponding attribute through training but is consumed over time 383.
