Classification and Attributes

Pokémon are categorized by one or more elemental types. Recorded examples include single-type Torkoal as Fire, dual-type Zubat as Poison/Flying, and Heatran as Fire/Steel 15 723 748.

A Pokémon's recorded information may include its gender, types, Ability, aptitude or potential, basic moves, inherited Egg Moves, and held item 2 15 748.

Aptitude can be measured technologically, though appraisals are expensive 2. It influences natural potential, but does not determine a battle by itself: a study found that a commanded Green-Aptitude Pokémon could defeat an uncommanded Blue-Aptitude counterpart at energy level thirty 2.

• High-aptitude Pokémon remain desirable, but the prevailing view is that improving as a Trainer is more effective than replacing a partner for better aptitude 2.
• Offspring of high-aptitude Pokémon are not guaranteed to inherit equally high aptitude 8.
• Some Pokémon have congenital deficiencies that damage their aptitude; Lu Ze knows of a costly formula intended to compensate for such conditions 27.

Abilities

Abilities are inherent traits with major battle effects.

• Drought creates Sunny Day when Torkoal enters battle 2.
• Infiltrator allows Zubat to attack through barriers and Substitute 15.
• Thick Fat halves Fire- and Ice-type damage received by Munchlax 15.
• Adaptability increases the power of moves matching the user's type 15 27.
• Truant affects Slaking's behavior both in battle and training, making it difficult to use as a primary battler 400.
• Clear Body prevents normal stat reduction by moves and Abilities 881.

Life Cycle and Evolution

Pokémon can be obtained and raised from Eggs. During the National College Entrance Examination period, a Pokémon's birth date must be verified for registration; Pokémon born more than five days earlier cannot be registered for the examination, preventing veteran Pokémon from competing against newly raised ones 11.

Evolution can substantially change a Pokémon's capabilities.

• Feebas evolved into Milotic and retained the full set of moves it could naturally learn after evolving 55.
• Onix's evolution was formally recorded and named Steelix, with its evolution conditions later investigated by Lu Ze, Lu Ba, Mo Qiancheng, and Sui Yan 99.
• Farfetch'd evolved into Sirfetch'd, gaining a Fighting type, the Ability Scrappy, and a broad combat move pool including First Impression, Swords Dance, Leaf Blade, and Close Combat 503.
• Pokémon Eggs can absorb energy dispersed by Arceus Plates more efficiently than hatched Pokémon, potentially improving their mastery of the corresponding type's energy and enabling unusual moves 842.

Battles and Training

Pokémon battles rely on a combination of type matchups, move proficiency, Abilities, weather, held items, stamina management, and Trainer command.

• Same-type attack bonuses increase the power of moves matching a Pokémon's type 32.
• Weather can transform a battle plan: Sunny Day boosts Fire-type moves, while Rain reduces their damage 786 1510.
• Held items can decide encounters, such as the Fire Emblem that enabled Torkoal's breakthrough and the Life Orb chosen by Reshiram to increase its offense 699 786.
• Pokémon may learn moves from TMs or from other Pokémon capable of teaching them 15.
• Unlike the world visited by Steven Stone, Lu Ze's world generally does not impose a four-move limit; Pokémon commonly learn every move available to them 991.

Strength Ranks

Pokémon strength is commonly discussed in ranked tiers, including Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Senior, Elite Four, and Master levels 958 1062 1165 1184.

Elite Four level is further divided into three stages. Reaching it is portrayed as a major threshold that cannot be reliably achieved through training alone; Pokémon require sufficient pressure, opportunity, and willpower 834 1184.

Human Relations and Care

Pokémon commonly form long-term partnerships with Trainers. Such bonds are central to battle, training, and daily life; Trainers direct their partners, while Pokémon may display independent preferences, loyalty, and initiative 106 220.

• Breeders manage nutrition, Energy Cube production, meal plans, and individualized training plans for Pokémon teams 220.
• Energy Cubes can improve physical strength, restore stamina, replenish energy, or support other specialized training goals 450.
• Pokémon may train independently, as Crobat did when she secretly increased her strength 220.
• The Pokémon Leagues' international convention forbids abandoning Pokémon, with severe penalties for violations 2.
• Pokémon do not automatically obey every human commander; a child's ability to command another person's Pokémon is considered highly unusual 1280.

Legendary Pokémon

Legendary Pokémon are exceptionally rare and powerful Pokémon. Some are associated with fixed locations, such as Kyurem in the Himalayas and reported sightings of Ho-Oh near Phoenix Ancient Town, while others—including Suicune, Entei, Raikou, and the Swords of Justice—roam widely 1.

Known Legendary Pokémon include Mew, Mewtwo, Victini, Manaphy, Latios, Latias, Rayquaza, Reshiram, Zacian, Shaymin, Moltres, Heatran, Genesect, and Arceus 128 495 723 748 851.

Legendary status does not make a Pokémon invincible. Lu Ze's Crobat defeated the Legendary Pokémon Moltres with Sludge Bomb, an achievement described as “slaying a god” 723.

Arceus Plates

Arceus Type Plates are rare items associated with Arceus.

• A Plate enhances the matching type when held and changes Judgment into that type; the Iron Plate enhances Steel-type attributes and makes Judgment Steel type 851.
• Plates also emit type energy that can be absorbed by Pokémon Eggs, improving the hatchling's affinity with that type 842.
