Qing Mountain Town, Wolf Head Mercenary Group headquarters hall.
Several mercenaries knelt on the floor, trembling as they stammered through the events of their journey.
Seated along both sides of the hall were the Wolf Head Mercenary Group's higher-ups. Normally, each of them looked fierce and spoke crudely, but now they were silent as cicadas, as though sitting on pins and needles.
The middle-aged man seated at the head of the hall was Mu She, the leader of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group and the man who held Qing Mountain Town in awe.
When he heard that his son, Mu Li, had actually died in the Magic Beast Mountains, Mu She crushed the jade cup in his hand into powder. Wine mixed with the fragments and dripped onto the floor.
"My son... is dead!"
Mu She's face twisted. He let out a hoarse chuckle, then began to laugh wildly. Yet his eyes, redder than those of a magic beast, revealed the blazing fury within him.
"You failed to protect your young leader and even let the killer escape, yet you still dared to come back! Why didn't you just die...?"
In a flash, Mu She shot down from the head seat. He moved like a gale, and the kneeling mercenaries scrambled to their feet in terror, trying to flee the hall. But Mu She was like an erupting volcano now; his uncontrollable killing intent desperately needed an outlet.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Amid a series of dull thuds, the mercenaries' heads burst like smashed watermelons. Their headless bodies swayed before collapsing to the floor, blood splattering everywhere.
Mu She let the exploding blood spray cover his body. Throwing back his head, he roared, "Mu Chen, you damned bastard! Do you think hiding in the Magic Beast Mountains means I can do nothing to you? I, Mu She, will kill you.
"All members of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group, enter the mountains and find that brat! Anyone who provides Mu Chen's hiding place will be rewarded with 50,000 gold coins. Whoever brings me Mu Chen's head will be promoted three ranks and rewarded with a Profound Tier Dou Technique."
The higher-ups exchanged glances. Even though some were dissatisfied, none of them dared provoke Mu She in his current state. They could only respond in unison.
That day, Mu She's furious roars echoed throughout Qing Mountain Town. The massive bounty caught the attention of countless mercenaries. This world had never lacked desperate outlaws.
Mu Chen's name also spread to every corner of Qing Mountain Town. When people learned that he had actually killed the Wolf Head Mercenary Group's young leader, they all gasped.
"Where did this ruthless guy come from? Even Mu Li fell at his hands!"
"Who cares who he is? Brothers, want to team up? Kill him, and you and I can cultivate Profound Tier Dou Techniques together..."
"Hehe, ignorance truly is fearless. How could the wrath of a Dou Master be so easily endured? I'd bet that fellow named Mu Chen won't live past three days."
While the people of Qing Mountain Town were discussing the matter heatedly, Mu Chen, the culprit behind it all, was currently inside a concealed cave.
"I've scattered the dung of second-tier magic beasts around the cave entrance. In the outer region of the Magic Beast Mountains, second-tier magic beasts are already quite powerful. No blind magic beast should come disturb me."
This magic beast dung had naturally come from Mu Li's Storage Ring. Mu Chen did not carry such wilderness survival supplies himself.
Profound Tier Mid-Level Dou Technique, Mad Lion's Roar. Blue quality, worth 200 points. Effect: Condenses an energy mad lion to strike enemies. Requires Wood Attribute Dou Qi to activate.
"Tch, and it's supposedly Profound Tier Mid-Level. Compared to Blazing Prairie Hundredfold Slashes of the same tier, this is practically trash."
Profound Tier Low-Level Dou Technique, Wood Hardening. Blue quality, worth 150 points. Effect: Hardening! Turns the user's body as tough as wood. Requires Wood Attribute Dou Qi to activate.
"An enhancement-type Dou Technique! That's fairly rare."
Mu Chen played with the jade slip in his hand. He had seen Mu Li use this Dou Technique before, but unfortunately, before Blazing Prairie Hundredfold Slashes, it was no different from scrap metal—it shattered on contact.
After pondering briefly, Mu Chen first pressed the jade slip containing Wood Hardening against his forehead. His soul perception entered it, and the method for circulating the technique immediately appeared in his mind.
"Wood Attribute happens to be my original attribute. These two Dou Techniques can broaden my arsenal."
Mu Chen had assumed that once he read the contents, the techniques recorded in the two jade slips would disappear. Yet when he tried sacrificing both slips to the system, he still received 350 points.
"It's probably because these Dou Techniques are relatively low-grade. I remember that advanced Dou Techniques are often inscribed with soul power. Once read, they become useless."
Adding the gold coins in the cave to those in Mu Li's Storage Ring, along with the miscellaneous items, Mu Chen kept around 200,000 gold coins as currency and sacrificed everything else to the system, receiving 600 points.
"950 points. That's enough for at least two draws."
Excitement spread across Mu Chen's face as the world before him immediately blurred. The Wheel Prize Pool appeared before him, and without hesitation, he began the draw.
"Frost Chill, Frost Chill..." Mu Chen shouted madly in his heart, his eyes fixed on the wheel as it slowed.
Unfortunately, things did not go as he wished.
Mu Chen's mouth twitched as he watched a huge sum deposited into the system inventory: 100,000 gold coins! His face was caught between laughter and tears.
"Damn it! I traded 200,000 gold coins for 100,000 gold coins, and I can't even sacrifice them for points. What a scam." Note: Items obtained from the system cannot be exchanged for points.
Of all the prizes in the Wheel Prize Pool, Mu Chen had drawn the worst one. He did not know whether that counted as exceptionally good luck or exceptionally bad luck.
However, when Mu Chen saw that the points required for the next draw had changed to 300, his mood immediately improved.
"Only 100 more points per draw? Whew... makes sense. This is only the most basic Wheel Prize Pool. It's good enough. If the price rose too much, how long would it take to finish drawing everything?"
Looking at his remaining 750 points, Mu Chen's lips curled slightly. Barring any surprises, he could still draw twice more.
"Gods bless me! As long as it isn't gold coins, give me anything."
After muttering that, Mu Chen began another draw. His eyes were locked on the wildly spinning wheel. This time, he did not shout anything in his heart. He knew full well that no matter what he drew this round, he would profit.
Finally, under Mu Chen's held breath, the pointer landed squarely in the item category.
"Uh, a book!"
Mu Chen reluctantly pulled his gaze away from the Frost Chill and Inkshadow Twin Swords that he had been coveting.
Beginner Alchemy Experience Book! Purple quality, priceless. Effect: Upon use, automatically learns the methods for refining first- to fourth-grade pills.
"Holy shit, I finally got lucky.
"An Alchemy Experience Book—good stuff! A commonly used fourth-grade pill is worth at least around 200,000 gold coins. The more powerful ones are worth several times that, like the Three-Mark Azure Spirit Pill! Even the two-mark version can sell for 400,000 gold coins at auction.
"Refining pills is practically a money-making business. This experience book came at exactly the right time.
"Once I master the refining methods and understand the key changes involved, with my Divine-Grade Talent, as long as I study diligently for a while, pills below the fifth grade will pose no difficulty whatsoever."
Mu Chen possessed both fire and wood attributes, so he already met the basic requirements of an alchemist. Since he was a transmigrator, his soul foundation was also decent, and he even had Heavenly Flames to assist him! With such a strong foundation, it would be a waste not to become an alchemist.
When cultivating Dou Qi, powerful cultivation methods and talent were certainly important. But if one cultivated step by step, it would consume an enormous amount of time and effort.
Pills could undoubtedly shorten that time greatly. Some special pills could also provide tremendous help in breaking through bottlenecks, such as the coveted Emperor-Breaking Pill and Sect-Breaking Pill! Often, it was that extra bit of help that allowed someone to overcome a difficult barrier and enter an entirely new realm.
Speaking of alchemists, they were publicly recognized as holding the most exalted status among all special professions on the continent. High-level alchemists in particular were highly sought after by powerful experts.
To request a high-level alchemist to refine a single pill, people would often pay enormous prices and still owe mountains of favors.
Even so, countless powerful experts still flocked to them.
What Mu Chen valued most, naturally, was how quickly alchemists made money.
The materials for a finished pill might account for only twenty or thirty percent of its value, perhaps even less. The rest was pure profit. Of course, that depended on having an extremely high success rate; otherwise, it was nothing but wishful thinking.
"Too bad I don't have a medicinal cauldron. Otherwise, I really would like to give it a try," Mu Chen muttered regretfully.
