Background / History

Gao Ming was once a highly regarded psychologist. In an earlier interview about Lost Media, he warned that violent, abusive, or psychologically distressing material could trigger latent illness, emotional collapse, disappearances, or death; he also advised people not to view or redistribute such media alone. He appeared notably young and immature in the recording. 26

After his wife died, Gao changed profoundly. He stole her corpse, opened the blood-red Door connected to the Underground Morgue, and worked with forensic-medicine professors on an Immortality Project. His objective was not mere survival of consciousness, but a complete restoration of his wife. 153 155 156

As Number Ten of the Ghost Story Association, Gao gathered patients and supernatural figures around himself. His “treatments” became grotesque distortions of psychological care: records in the Underground Morgue describe him drowning a patient to address childhood-abuse trauma and cooking and eating another patient's source of stress. 153

His cruelty is rooted in grief and obsession rather than simple sadism. Gao brings Men Nan to Chen Ge’s Haunted House and introduces the boy’s case. He later leaves Zhang Ze and Chen Ge to investigate Men Nan’s apartment while maintaining his role as the boy’s psychiatrist. 61

Gao provides Zhang Ze with the suppressed history of the abandoned Second Ward, including the fatal fire and rumors of a burned woman. He then attempts to take Sanjiu Yinyu into his custody, exposing his interest in unusual patients. 94

Gao gathers the Association’s surviving core members in the Underground Morgue and waits for midnight, when his Door opens. Zhang Ze enters the Door-After World, discovers the remains of Gao’s associates, and learns that Gao had prepared not only for him, but also for Yue Pan. 153 154

After killing Yue Pan, Gao escorts Zhang Ze through the corrupted hospital to the clean operating room preserved for his wife. He thanks Zhang Ze for waiting, then allows his grief, resentment, crimes, and self-destructive urges to fuel the beginning of their decisive battle. 156
