Ch. 101Patients
Key plot points and events
- Zhang Ze searches the Administration Building’s locked Room Thirteen by dissolving into black water. Inside, he finds restraint beds, surgical lamps, old bloodstains, and equipment used for electroshock “treatments.”
- He concludes that Professor Yang tortured patients rather than treating them. Feng Xiaomin had been an ordinary girl who liked video games, yet her family had labeled her mentally ill and sent her to the hospital.
- Zhang Ze cannot locate Yang, but evidence suggests the doctor is still nearby: his crow was attacked earlier, and the only electroshock device still in working order has been taken.
- At midnight, Zhang Ze spots what looks like a mass of dark figures in the inpatient building. They are living patients, not ghosts—shaved, malnourished, scarred by electroshock, and seemingly unable to react to him.
- Realizing that at least a dozen people may be missing and hidden there, Zhang Ze urgently summons Kuai Liang.
- The patients suddenly kneel together and recite words of repentance, thanking the doctor for “reforming” them and asking to continue. Zhang Ze is horrified by the scale and secrecy of the abuse.
Character developments
- Zhang Ze grows more certain that Professor Yang is a brutal criminal and resolves to kill him. Discovering that victims are still alive shifts his focus from hunting an enemy to confronting a hidden human tragedy.
- Kuai Liang is called in as an ally, though his surprised, weary replies provide a brief contrast to Zhang Ze’s urgency.
- Feng Xiaomin is further established as a victim of wrongful institutionalization and abuse, rather than someone who was genuinely mentally ill.
- Professor Yang remains unseen, but the missing working device and surviving patients reinforce the likelihood that he is still active and dangerous.
Significant themes
- Abuse disguised as treatment: Medical equipment and the language of reform conceal torture and coercion.
- Powerlessness and dehumanization: Patients are restrained, isolated, and reduced to obedient figures who repeat a ritual of gratitude.
- Institutional and familial betrayal: Feng Xiaomin’s family helped send her to the hospital despite her not being mentally ill, while the institution hid its victims from discovery.
- The limits of force: Zhang Ze could easily fight ghosts, but the people he finds are living victims, demanding a different response.
Character interactions
- Zhang Ze questions Little Door and Xiaolin about Professor Yang’s whereabouts, but they cannot provide useful information.
- Zhang Ze contacts Kuai Liang and tells him that numerous possible missing persons have been found in the abandoned hospital.
- Zhang Ze observes the patients’ synchronized prayer-like ritual, in which they praise the doctor who abused them—a chilling indication of how thoroughly they have been conditioned.
