His commitment to the family overrides kinship and morality. He arranged a public scheme involving his elder brother Yang Yueshan, then turned the staged confrontation into a lethal display of power that eliminated both a political obstacle and a rival claimant to Yang Family resources. 26 27 28
Despite his ruthlessness, he is capable of grief and vulnerability. Following the deaths of his son Yang Mingyuan and younger brother Yang Jinshan, he remained beside their coffins and dismissed surviving retainers so they could escape Lin'an City's danger. 41 44

Equipment / Items
- Mountains and Rivers Sword Seal manual — A Yang Family patriarchal inheritance; Yang Zhenshan used a copy as bait in his scheme against Yang Yueshan. 26
- Blood-and-Flesh Pill — Used to overcome his Qi Refining bottleneck and reach the Ninth Layer; its production relies on human flesh and blood and carries serious side effects. 28
- Cold-Iron Saber — A Yellow-rank mid-grade saber he gave Zhou Qi before sending him to Blackstone Mine. 18
Background / History
Yang Zhenshan inherited leadership of the Yang Family in Lin'an City after a struggle for the family headship roughly a decade earlier. His elder brothers Yang Yueshan and Yang Junshan retained control of outside businesses, but he accused them of withholding profits and attempting to claim the Black Iron Mine that he had secured for the family. 15 28
When Zhou Qi infiltrated his study to steal the lower volume of the Qi-Nourishing Art, Yang Zhenshan immediately subdued him. Rather than execute the intruder, he recognized Zhou Qi's rare talent and converted him into a useful subordinate. He rewarded Zhou Qi with resources, appointed him chief steward of Blackstone Mine, and equipped him with a Cold-Iron Saber. 7 8 10 17 18
To force the other Lin'an families to yield Blackstone Mine shares, Yang Zhenshan arranged for Yang Yueshan to pose as an assassin and steal the Mountains and Rivers Sword Seal. When Yang Yueshan attempted to keep the inheritance for himself, Yang Zhenshan used the opportunity to kill him publicly, presenting the death as the elimination of an assassin. 26 27 He later justified the act as necessary to remove a hindrance to the Yang Family's growth and reclaim businesses controlled by his brothers. 28
His gains proved temporary. Jin Tie, an emissary connected to Blackstone City and the Champion Marquis, severely wounded Yang Zhenshan; his son Yang Mingyuan and brother Yang Jinshan were killed during the crisis. In the aftermath, Yang Zhenshan gave Zhou Qi the antidote to the Soul-Splitting Pill, the Mountains and Rivers Sword Seal fragment, and the first part of a Foundation Establishment method in return for a promise to kill Jin Tie. 37 41 42
Yang Zhenshan survived the Yang Family's fall and returned to Lin'an City after advancing to Foundation Establishment, Second Layer. He reclaimed the Yang Residence from the Wang Family, defeated Wang Tiannan, and ultimately killed him on Zhou Qi's order when Qin Hao brought Wang Tiannan to seek revenge. 118 119 120
