Tian Qianqian paused, then gave him a knowing smile and winked. "Then I'll leave it to you."
With that, she tactfully pulled Wen Lan and the still-worried Song Qiang away from the scene.
"Huh? We're just leaving like this?" Song Qiang let himself be dragged along, constantly looking back in concern. "Chu Tian doesn't seem to be doing too well. We're not going to look after him?"
"Oh, stop worrying," Tian Qianqian said, tugging his arm and urging him to walk faster. "His husband is here. It's not like he'll abandon him."
Even dogs hated it when couples fought.
They had no idea what the two of them had argued about, but seeing Chu Tian looking so sullen made their hearts ache. The kid was much cuter when he was lively and cheerful.
The kid, who had already slept poorly, had forced himself to stay alert all day. Now that he was getting off work beneath the stars, he truly could not hold on any longer. His eyes had already closed.
As he swayed forward by instinct, a hand reached out from beside him and gently caught his arm.
"Little Huang?" Chu Tian did not open his eyes. Reassured, he leaned over and unceremoniously pressed his weight against the other person. "Give me a hand. I'm about to collapse."
The person beside him steadily supported his arm, letting Chu Tian lean halfway against him as he led him outside.
In his daze, Chu Tian seemed to catch a comforting scent. The next second, his consciousness sank completely into darkness.
After sleeping soundly through the night, Chu Tian did not open his eyes until noon the next day.
The room was silent. Chu Tian shook off his drowsiness and discovered that he was wearing pajamas. Thinking Little Huang had changed him, he was instantly touched.
Who would have thought that beneath Little Huang's rough exterior was such a considerate person?
Well-rested and refreshed, Chu Tian's mood improved even further when he checked his phone and saw the good news Little Cai had sent him.
[Little Cai: Sun Bo woke up, but he's badly injured. The doctor said there's a blood clot in his brain pressing on his nerves, and his ribs are shattered. He'll probably need several more surgeries. The production disbanding is a certainty now. I tested the waters, and he's softened.]
Little Cai was a capable worker. Besides serving as Chu Tian's assistant, he always kept an eye on Sun Bo and the others.
When he heard that Sun Bo had finally shown signs of waking up after several days unconscious from severe injuries, Little Cai rushed to the hospital at once. While visiting on Chu Tian's behalf, he tested Sun Bo's attitude.
After praising Little Cai's capabilities, Chu Tian's eyes shifted as he began to concern himself with something else.
[Chu Tian: Are you still at the hospital? Who's taking care of Director Sun right now? Does he have any family there?]
[Little Cai: I'm still at the hospital. A caregiver was looking after him before, but Director Sun just called someone and asked them to come to the hospital to talk. The voice on the other end sounded a lot like Wang Yang.]
Chu Tian sprang out of bed, thrilled.
The gossip had arrived!
[Chu Tian: Wait for me at the hospital. I'm heading over to visit Director Sun right now!]
[Little Cai: ?]
Little Cai did not understand what had suddenly made Chu Tian so excited, but he was smart. He immediately agreed obediently and said he would buy flowers and a fruit basket near the hospital while he waited.
Chu Tian gave Little Cai an approving mental thumbs-up, then hopped out of bed, happily washed up and changed clothes, and rushed out of the hotel at top speed—only to fall into deep thought.
He had been so excited that he had forgotten Little Huang had left him a message saying there was something going on at home, so he was taking the day off. Little Cai was not around either, which meant no one could drive him.
The filming location arranged by the production crew was incredibly remote and deserted. He could not get a taxi at all.
Knowing there was juicy gossip within reach yet being unable to get to it, Chu Tian paced in circles like a trapped beast, nearly frantic with anxiety.
Just then, Gu Shiyan appeared before him like a ray of light.
Chu Tian's eyes lit up as he looked at the keys in Gu Shiyan's hand. He cleared his throat and called out to him with feigned composure.
Gu Shiyan stopped and raised his brows at him, seeming to ask what he wanted.
"Are... are you going out?"
"Yeah." Gu Shiyan nodded. "What is it?"
"Where are you going?"
Seeing the expectant look on Chu Tian's face, Gu Shiyan's eyes flickered with amusement. Without betraying anything, he said, "I heard Director Sun woke up. I'm going to visit him."
Chu Tian: "!"
"I'm going too!" Chu Tian immediately perked up. "Director Sun took good care of me while we were filming. Now that I've heard he's awake, I have to go visit him!"
What care? With Sun Bo letting the editor revise the script every day, the actors who had been screwed over were doing well if they did not curse him behind his back.
But the two of them, fully aware of the truth, did not expose each other and happily reached an agreement.
Gu Shiyan drove toward the hospital, and the silence in the car was frightening.
Chu Tian slumped in his seat and stared out the window, presenting Gu Shiyan with the back of his stubborn head, clearly refusing to communicate.
Just when Chu Tian thought they would reach their destination in this strange atmosphere, Gu Shiyan suddenly spoke.
"Is there nothing you want to ask me? About Zhang Yang."
Chu Tian's body stiffened. He pursed his lips and gave a soft snort. "Ask what? What happens between you two has nothing to do with me."
Chu Tian did not realize in the slightest that his tone was steeped in jealousy.
The corner of Gu Shiyan's mouth lifted as he patiently said, "But I want to tell you. Are you willing to listen?"
Chu Tian's lips moved. He could not suppress their slight upward curve, yet he still stubbornly muttered in a dismissive tone, "If you want to talk, then talk. It's not like I've taped your mouth shut."
"The Zhang family and my family were not exactly old friends. His father had business dealings with my father in the past, and later they moved into the same villa district, so the families occasionally visited as neighbors. Taking advantage of that, Zhang's father got several collaborative projects from my father, and the Zhang company's market value kept rising. Later, when something happened to my family, Zhang's father seized the opportunity to poach several partners and take over our projects."
Gu Shiyan's tone was calm, yet Chu Tian could smell bloodshed beneath his bland account. He could not help turning to look at Gu Shiyan, trying to find some unusual expression on his face.
But there was none. Gu Shiyan's emotions had remained remarkably steady from beginning to end.
"At the time, my father wanted to stabilize the situation and asked Zhang's father for help, only to have every method of contact blocked," Gu Shiyan said in a joking tone. "And after Zhang Yang learned what had happened, he seemed afraid that I might ask something of him, so he fled overseas overnight."
Was that funny?
It was not funny at all!
The faint jealousy in Chu Tian's heart instantly vanished. His gaze toward Gu Shiyan was filled with heartache, while Zhang Yang's actions left him utterly baffled.
Zhang Yang—or rather, the Zhang family—had indeed had no obligation to help the Gu family back then. But they had benefited greatly from the Gu family. Even if they did not lend a hand, they should not have kicked them while they were down at their most difficult moment, becoming one of the straws that crushed the Gu family.
Later, the Gu family went bankrupt. Gu Shiyan's father was hounded by creditors until he had nowhere left to turn, then fell from a building to his death. Unable to bear the blow, Gu Shiyan's mother suffered a sudden illness and followed him in death.
Overnight, Gu Shiyan had lost both of his closest family members and been left utterly alone.
After what the Zhang family had done, what kind of mindset did Zhang Yang have now, coming to Gu Shiyan again?
Did he not know that every time he came near, he made Gu Shiyan remember the pain he had suffered?
