The Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars had been compiled in ancient times, but as the ages progressed, it underwent corresponding revisions, replacing old stories of filial devotion with new ones.

The edition of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars submitted by Xiang Prefecture contained one such story. During the Eastern Han, a man named Guo Ju supported his mother after his family divided its property, and later had a son. Since elderly people doted on their grandchildren, his mother would give her food to the boy. Guo Ju saw that his family was already destitute; if his mother shared her food with his son, she might well starve to death. He therefore prepared to bury his newborn son, but while digging the pit, he unearthed a jar of gold, thereby saving the boy.

The Saint Origin Continent held this story in the highest esteem, considering Guo Ju a paragon of filial devotion.

After pondering for a long time, Fang Yun removed the story. He then recalled the books he had read over the years, replaced it with another incident that had actually happened, and supplied a new poem.

There was nothing extraordinary about the new story. It told of a young man in the Shu Kingdom who, after marrying, discovered that he could not support both his mother and his wife. He therefore gave most of the food to them and went hungry himself, then worked diligently, earning the workshop owner's recognition and financial support for his studies. He eventually became an Academy Student and gave his whole family a good life.
