Classical formulas originally referred only to prescriptions set down by Medical School Half-Sages, but after reforms within the Medical School, certain exceptionally effective prescriptions could also become classical formulas.

Indeed, the lifelong goal of many Medical School practitioners was to create a classical formula.

A verified prescription approved by the Sacred Academy Medical Hall was enough to make a Medical School practitioner famous and leave their name in the Historical Records of the Medical Way. What was more, any Medical Book needed to establish its own "Medical Way system" before it could possess power, including the identification of illnesses, analysis of symptoms, methods of treatment, and all manner of other components. Not one could be missing.

Even geniuses of the Medical School such as Zhang Zilong and Hua Yuqing had begun studying medicine at the age of five or six. After years of practice, they spent at least one month every year treating patients, and only after passing the age of twenty did they write Medical Books.
