Background
The Alliance derives its legitimacy from the ancient Arathi Empire, founded by Soladin the Great. Its long historical inheritance, independent sovereignty, and strength distinguish it as an official faction rather than a subordinate or monster power. 228
It is a loose confederation rather than a centralized empire. The Kingdom of Lordaeron is its strongest constituent power and frequently seeks to direct Alliance policy, but individual kingdoms retain their own armies, interests, and political agendas. 149 385

History
Orc resurgence and Stormwind’s fall
Stormwind requested aid after Orc forces reappeared in the Dark Swamp, proposing an Alliance coalition army to counter a possible full-scale invasion. Alterac’s Prince Aidan initially argued that Stormwind might be exploiting the crisis to gain leadership within the Alliance. 134
The threat proved genuine when the Dark Portal crisis escalated. Stormwind mobilized its army to defend the Blasted Lands, while Alliance heroes divided between defending the portal and joining the attempt to assassinate the corrupted Medivh. 170 171
Stormwind City later fell and King Llane was killed. Alterac’s princes initially treated the disaster as proof of Stormwind’s weakness, but still accepted that Alterac could not openly abandon its Alliance obligations. 298
Alliance–Horde war
Lordaeron became the main force behind a renewed Alliance coalition, establishing the Knights of the Silver Hand and mobilizing more than 500,000 troops for war against the Horde. 322
During the Wetlands campaign, Prince Aidan proposed a unified command structure:
| Command | Assigned leader |
|---|---|
| Infantry and ranged forces | Duke Lothar |
| Cavalry | Prince Thorbane |
| Mage units | Two Archmages |
| Aerial forces | Prince Aidan / the Storm Dragon King |
The arrangement placed Alliance ground troops, cavalry, spellcasters, and aerial units under specialized commanders. 356
The coalition’s unity remained fragile. Lordaeron nobles abandoned their position during the Wetlands battle under the guise of retreat, exposing the Alliance flank to Horde attack. 356
Postwar division
After the Orc threat temporarily receded, King Godwin proposed that Alliance nations fund Orc detention camps and the reconstruction of Stormwind City. The proposal caused widespread resentment because weaker states were expected to shoulder major costs. 416 417
Quel’Thalas and Torrentkeep withdrew in protest, becoming neutral powers. Alterac, Gilneas, and Aerie Peak remained, though Alterac delayed its commitments by citing financial hardship. 417
The split established a lasting divide between the Alliance’s public ideals of unity and the competing interests of its member states. 417
Watch Legion and later crises
King Godwin later founded the Watch Legion to monitor the Dark Portal and prevent another Horde invasion. Its forces included elite troops from multiple Alliance states, including Dalaran battle mages, Stormwind Knights, and Lordaeron crossbowmen. 421
When the Horde attacked Quel’Thalas, the remaining Alliance powers debated intervention. A 300,000-strong coalition army was proposed, with Alterac expected to provide 50,000 troops despite its limited resources. 458
During the Scourge advance, Alliance leaders gathered at Dalaran to coordinate the defense of the city. The Scourge Legion had already breached Thoradin’s Wall and could expand by converting the dead into Undead soldiers, making Dalaran the coalition’s immediate strategic priority. 567
Government and Politics
- Confederated structure — Member kingdoms retain their own rulers, armies, and interests; Alliance-wide decisions require negotiation rather than direct command. 385 416
- Lordaeron’s dominance — Lordaeron’s size, wealth, military strength, and diplomatic network make it the Alliance’s leading power. 149
- Godwin’s leadership — As King of Lordaeron, Godwin uses Alliance reconstruction, prison policy, the Watch Legion, and Holy Light institutions to expand Lordaeron’s influence. 416 421 458
- Alterac’s balancing policy — Alterac seeks to remain within the Alliance while avoiding commitments that could make it subordinate to Lordaeron. 417 421
- Factional self-interest — Member states repeatedly prioritize territory, wealth, security, or political independence over collective obligations. 416 458
Military
- Coalition armies — The Alliance can combine national infantry, cavalry, mage corps, knightly orders, and aerial forces into large expeditionary armies. 322 356
- Knights of the Silver Hand — Founded in Lordaeron under Uther as Grandmaster; the order becomes one of the Alliance’s foremost elite formations and establishes the Paladin class. 322
- Dragonmourne Knights — Prince Aidan’s knight order contributes Dragon-Thunder Knights and Storm Wyrmling riders to Alliance campaigns. 352 356
- Watch Legion — A multinational force assigned to watch the Dark Portal and deter renewed Horde incursions. 421
- Holy Spirit Warriors — The Golden Sacred Tree can mark eligible warriors for resurrection as Holy Spirit Warriors; resurrected individuals retain rank and level but lose skills and become bound to the Guardians of the Golden Tree. 458
Relations
- Horde — The Alliance’s principal military rival during the Orc wars; the conflict drives coalition mobilization but also exposes internal disunity. 322 356
- Quel’Thalas — Former member state that withdrew during the 1439 political crisis; its later Orc invasion forces Alliance leaders to reconsider cooperation. 417 457 458
- Torrentkeep — Former member state that withdrew alongside Quel’Thalas and became neutral. 417
- Night Elf Alliance — A separate official faction based in Kalimdor; it later fights alongside Alliance-aligned forces against the Dragon God’s apocalyptic plans. 385 635
- Undead Pact — A later official faction led by Lich King Varian; its emergence marks the end of the Scourge Era and further complicates Azeroth’s factional balance. 578
