History
The Horde gathered around the completed Dark Portal under Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer, preparing a million-strong Orc army to invade Azeroth. Orgrim organized the initial campaign into four waves led by major clans and chieftains, while Gul'dan supplied the Horde with Demon Blood and fel power. 160
During the Tides of Darkness launch, the Horde received hundreds of thousands of additional Orcs from established clans and twenty-seven new clans. It became a selectable faction for players, with Orc adventurers and Clan Chieftain lord templates integrated into its structure. 196
Its Blasted Lands base grew into a fortified encampment surrounding the Dark Portal. Orgrim struggled to feed and discipline roughly one million warriors, relying on Orc adventurers for labor, intelligence gathering, construction, and raids. 206
The Horde's first major reverse came at Dagger Ridge, where Grom Hellscream's 30,000 Wolf Riders were annihilated by Stormwind-led forces. Hellscream disappeared after the battle, while the loss proved that the Horde could not simply overwhelm the Alliance through cavalry and aggression. 215
Orgrim adapted with coordinated surprise attacks, striking more than a dozen Alliance castles while player forces were offline. The Horde later breached Stormwind with Ner'zhul's Firelord-backed elemental assault, but its wider war effort was weakened by the Frostwolf Clan's destruction in Alterac and escalating internal divisions. 233 286 323
After disastrous losses in the Wetlands and Dun Morogh, the Horde retreated to Stormwind with only 200,000 survivors. Orgrim divided its remaining strength into six legions and attempted to hold Stormwind for a year while those forces pursued separate supernatural and military objectives. 378 380
The Alliance eventually recaptured Stormwind and killed Orgrim, ending the Second Orc War. His death triggered immediate fragmentation: Kilrogg Deadeye's Blood God Legion and Ner'zhul's Abyss Legion broke away, while the remaining Horde forces lost much of their former authority. 384
Ruthless Tyrant Blade, Orgrim's chosen successor, secured support from Rend Blackhand and Nekros Skullcrusher and formally became the Horde's third Warchief. He shifted the Horde's immediate focus from Azeroth conquest to rebuilding Draenor, attracting adventurers, investors, and corporate backing through the Horde Corporation. 385 419
The True Horde later defeated Grogo Evil Eye's Fel Fire Legion and retook the Black Temple, reunifying the Orc forces of Draenor under Ruthless Tyrant Blade. 418
After securing Draenor, Ruthless reopened the path to Azeroth with a 500,000-strong army. His Horde incorporated Holy Light teachings through Shattrath and developed new classes to attract more adventurers before launching a renewed invasion. 447
The later campaign against Quel'Thalas demonstrated both the Horde's reach and its ruthlessness. It used the Sunwell to summon Demon Lords, then evacuated elite troops, supplies, and captives through a portal while abandoning many low-level soldiers and adventurers during its withdrawal from Silvermoon. 497
In the events surrounding Thrall's childhood, Grom Hellscream killed Destroyer Blackhand in a Mak'gora, claimed the Warchief's throne, and redirected the Horde away from immediate war with the Alliance toward building an Orc empire through conquest of other Azerothian lands. 644
Leadership and Organization
| Era | Warchief | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Second Orc War | Orgrim Doomhammer | Led the Dark Portal invasion, centralized the clan coalition, and pursued increasingly extreme military solutions before dying during Stormwind's recapture. 160 384 |
| Postwar rebuilding | Ruthless Tyrant Blade | Orgrim's appointed successor and the Horde's third Warchief; gained the Faction Leader template and rebuilt Horde power through investment, recruitment, and faction development. 378 385 |
| Horde Ending events | Grom Hellscream | Killed Blackhand, seized the Warchief's throne, and proposed expanding the Horde into an Orc empire rather than immediately confronting the Alliance. 644 |
Clan-Based Structure
The Horde is built around semi-autonomous clans rather than a fully unified standing state. Warchiefs can issue proclamations and distribute troops, but powerful clan leaders often retain practical independence, send only token aid, or refuse major campaigns outright. 385 448
| Legion / Force | Commander | Role or disposition |
|---|---|---|
| Abyss Legion | Ner'zhul | Pursued Old God and Abyssal power before becoming independent. 380 384 |
| Fel Orc Legion | Grogo Evil Eye | Relied on Demon Blood and demonic forces; later rebelled against Ruthless Tyrant Blade. 380 386 |
| Blood God Legion | Kilrogg Deadeye | Sought Hakkar's power and later defected as the monster faction Hand of the Blood God. 380 384 |
| Iron Legion | Rend Blackhand | Blackrock-led heavy force that pledged conditional loyalty while preserving autonomy. 380 385 |
| Dragonflight | Nekros Skullcrusher | Dragonmaw force built around controlled dragons and dragon riders. 380 448 |
| Draenor Legion | Ruthless Tyrant Blade | The Warchief's principal force, reinforced by smaller clans and allied races. 380 |
Military Strength and Assets

| Renewed Azeroth invasion | 500,000 troops | Ruthless Tyrant Blade returned after securing Draenor and mobilized a new expeditionary army. 447 |
Troop Types and Support
| Asset | Capabilities | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf Riders | Fast cavalry able to traverse difficult terrain, dismount into infantry, and use wolves in battle. | Hellscream's 30,000-strong force included Warsong Wolf Riders, Blackrock dire-wolf cavalry, and Tyrant Blade Hellboar Riders; it was destroyed at Dagger Ridge. 206 215 |
| Flamewalkers | Fire magic, weapon enchantment, burning attacks, and Fire Elemental summoning. | Created by Ner'zhul from Orc followers of Ragnaros. 323 |

| Fel Dragon Riders | Aerial and ground assaults using Fel-corrupted dragons. | Dragonmaw warlocks transformed Green Dragons into stronger but low-intelligence Fel Flame Dragons. 323 |
| Shamans and warlocks | Elemental rifts, demons, healing, buffs, dispels, and fel attacks. | Horde coordination against the Storm Dragon King showed how shamans, warlocks, and mounted heroes could combine their abilities against a superior individual foe. 353 466 |

Faction Systems
| System | Effects |
|---|---|
| War Frenzy | Increased Horde population growth by 300%, doubled the chance of high-tier births, and generated generic Orc elite and boss units as the population expanded. 154 |
| Orc Horde faction selection | Allowed players to join the Horde as Orc adventurers or establish clans through the Clan Chieftain lord template. 196 |
| Faction Development System | Granted to Ruthless Tyrant Blade after he became Warchief, allowing the development of faction classes, troops, and power systems. 385 447 |
| Horde Insignia | Issued to adventurers who complete the Warchief audience quest after choosing the Horde faction. 418 |
Adventurers
Orc adventurers are valuable but difficult to control. They take paid work ranging from gathering and construction to killing enemies, helping solve the Horde's supply crisis while also causing disorder whenever left idle. 206
Their willingness to treat civilians as experience sources turned regions such as Alterac into long-term leveling zones, where Horde adventurers raided farms, villages, and watchtowers for equipment and skill books. 261
Player-controlled chieftains and agents have repeatedly undermined Horde unity for profit. Some cooperated with Alliance players, leaked intelligence, sabotaged fellow clans, or pursued reputation gains rather than victory. 357 375
Ruthless Tyrant Blade later treated adventurer recruitment as a strategic priority, using new classes and faction systems to compete with the Alliance for players. 447
