| Peak parameters of his current Servant manifestation | 364 | At Kirei’s death, a vast influx of mana heals Gilgamesh’s internal injuries and raises every parameter to its highest level since summoning. Five Command Spells strengthen his body; his A+-rank Independent Action and direct acquisition of mana from Gaia allow him to continue fighting without a Master. |
Background / History
Gilgamesh is described as the oldest King of Heroes, created by the ancient gods. He lived during the Age of Gods, witnessing ancient magecraft and encountering numerous heroes and deities. Although predominantly divine himself, he broke with the gods after a green-haired figure in white robes died in his arms 271 277 354.
His death and subsequent transformation into a Heroic Spirit were willing choices. He regarded the Throne of Heroes as a means of escaping the restrictions of a human body and releasing his power more fully. Consequently, the destruction of a summoned manifestation holds little terror for him 354.
In Fuyuki, he manifests as Tokiomi Tohsaka’s Archer. His Independent Action, magical expertise, and mana-restoring treasures make him unusually autonomous, undermining Tokiomi’s assumption that a Master can control his Servant 219.
Appearance
- Blond hair and crimson eyes, with his pupils described as vertically shaped 218 301 302.
- Golden armor, which provides genuine protection rather than merely displaying royal splendor 260 353.
- Lean, muscular physique and crimson tattoos, exposed when his damaged upper armor shatters during the battle with Leon 364.
- Modern casual clothing, which he can substitute for his armor 291.
- Golden magical ripples accompany the opening of his treasury and the deployment of its contents 219 239.
Personality
Gilgamesh treats kingship as absolute authority. He calls opponents “mongrels,” considers interference with his departure a capital offense, and claims ownership of every treasure in the world—including Leon’s holy sword and the Holy Grail. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that hearing a subject’s counsel is a king’s duty 219 241 354.
Entertainment matters more to him than obtaining the Grail or reaching the Root. He describes the universe as his garden and deliberately suppresses his knowledge-revealing Noble Phantasm to preserve the pleasure of discovering secrets himself. Leon exploits this preference when preparing a trap against him 257 301 354.
His cruelty is particularly evident in his relationship with Kirei. He enjoys dismantling Kirei’s self-deception, encourages him to seek pleasure in suffering, and anticipates Saber’s reaction to betrayal by her Master. He even permits damage to his claimed Grail if the spectacle proves sufficiently entertaining 257 272 302 329.
Despite his contemptuous manner, Gilgamesh respects courage and exceptional opposition. He rejects attacking exhausted rivals, allows Iskandar to deploy his army, and recognizes both Iskandar’s resolve and Leon’s strength. His pride does not prevent tactical adaptation: he changes weapons against resistant armor and cancels an attack when it threatens the Grail 284 291 339 342 353 366.
Abilities & Skills
Gate of Babylon
Gilgamesh’s treasury contains the original forms of the world’s Noble Phantasms. Golden portals allow him to retrieve treasures or launch them directly as projectiles 340 355.
- Mass bombardment: Fires barrages ranging from dozens of weapons to thousands, attacking multiple opponents simultaneously 239 277.
- Omnidirectional defense: Surrounds him with portals and suppressing fire, holding back Leon’s endless Shadow Familiars 363.
- Specialized counters: Includes weapons effective against unusual defensive materials such as Vibranium 353.
- Utility treasures: Stores defensive shields, transportation, wine, and mana-replenishing items 219 258 263 355.
- Limits: Heavy use strains a human Master’s mana supply. Its enormous inventory also means Gilgamesh does not necessarily recognize or locate an unfamiliar weapon’s original immediately 277 355.
Ea — Enuma Elish
Ea is his Anti-World Noble Phantasm. Its three blade sections rotate in opposing directions, producing wind-pressure fractures that tear through space. Its released attack is named Enuma Elish, also rendered “Star of Separation, Heaven and Earth” 340 353 368.
- Reality Marble destruction: Collapses Iskandar’s Ionioi Hetairoi and Leon’s Shadow Realm 341 363.
- World-rending output: Its clash with Leon’s Bi-frost briefly fractures the world, requiring Gaia’s immediate repair 365.
- Direct execution: Gilgamesh uses its blade to pierce Iskandar’s chest and later attempts the same finishing blow against Leon 342 366.
- Durability: Withstands the Ebony Blade and blocks All-Black the Necrosword, although transmitted force can still injure Gilgamesh 353 363.
- Final limitation: Leon’s genuine body ultimately destroys Ea 372.
Chains of Heaven
The Chains of Heaven bind opponents and are especially effective against divinity. Gilgamesh describes them as the commandments of the gods: divine power itself makes a target subject to their restraint 218 226 366.
- Halt Iskandar’s final charge after he survives the treasury’s bombardment 342.
- Immobilize Leon following their devastating final exchange 366.
- Present such a severe compatibility disadvantage that Leon seeks allies rather than confidently confronting Gilgamesh alone 226.
Star of Omniscience and Omnipotence
A permanently active Noble Phantasm formed through the sublimation of Gilgamesh’s spirit, capable of revealing true names, origins, and concealed information. He ordinarily seals its knowledge-revealing function for his own amusement 301 302 354.
- Could expose Leon’s false identity, Kariya’s actual role, and Avalon’s location within Kiritsugu 354.
- His refusal to use it leaves exploitable gaps in his knowledge 354.
- During his final battle, he briefly examines Leon’s parameters, discovering EX in every category except E- Luck 364.
- Even without activating it, his personal insight lets him recognize Kirei’s suppressed desires 257.
Independent Action & Magecraft
His Archer manifestation possesses A+-rank Independent Action, allowing extended activity after losing his Master 364.
- Uses treasury items to replenish mana independently 219.
- Is an exceptionally capable magus who could theoretically construct a ritual to draw from ley lines 219.
- Fuyuki’s available ley-line supply is restricted because the Great Holy Grail consumes almost all of it 219.
- Remains subject to Command Spell compulsion, as demonstrated when Tokiomi forces his retreat 241.
Mobility & Perception
- Spirit Form: Becomes invisible and intangible, including passing through walls 219 271.
- Unaided flight: Can stop himself and hover without Vimana 353.
- Teleportation treasures: Allow rapid relocation, though the accumulated sins around Mount Enzou obstruct their use 352.
- Exceptional eyesight: Detects distant targets beyond the sight of ordinary humans and other Servant classes 337.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden armor — Protects against powerful impacts, but cannot automatically repair the damage inflicted by Leon 353 364.
- Vimana / Throne of Heaven — A gold-and-emerald flying vessel with a royal throne, surveillance projections, beam weapons, and a transforming main cannon described as possessing the power of the sun 263 277 329 353.
- Key Sword — Searches the treasury and retrieves a chosen Noble Phantasm. Gilgamesh uses its elaborate retrieval sequence before fighting Iskandar as a gesture of respect 340.
- Noble Phantasm shields — Include an automatic barrier against physical projectiles. Seven stacked shields, ranked C through A, are destroyed by a single kick from Ultimate Kuuga Leon 355 364.
- Divine wine and golden vessels — Treasures used during conversations and royal gatherings; the wine restores Kirei’s youth and vitality 258 338.
- Ebony Blade — Seized from Kariya and subsequently discarded at Leon’s feet 360.
Relationships
- Tokiomi Tohsaka — Original Master. Tokiomi’s outward submission conceals his belief that Gilgamesh is a controllable weapon; a forced retreat aggravates their conflict. Gilgamesh finds Tokiomi’s concealed rebellion more interesting than his loyalty 219 241 271.
- Kirei Kotomine — Subsequent Master and companion in the pursuit of pleasure. Gilgamesh guides his psychological awakening and appreciates his honesty more than Tokiomi’s hypocrisy. Their contract is formally established after Tokiomi’s death 257 275 328.
- Leon Stark Odinsson — Principal rival and eventual victor. Gilgamesh progresses from mocking his disguises and imitation treasury to acknowledging him as the opponent who has forced him into his most battered state 352 364 366 372.
- Iskandar — Rival king whom he personally vows to kill. They share wine before their duel, and Gilgamesh respects his refusal to surrender even after defeating him 262 338 342.
- Waver Velvet — Iskandar’s retainer. After killing Iskandar, Gilgamesh questions Waver and recognizes his changed relationship with the fallen king 342.
- Kariya Matou — Persistent attacker whom Gilgamesh dismisses as a “mad dog.” Kariya’s resilience repeatedly frustrates him and eventually draws his interest in the Ebony Blade 239 284 355.
- Artoria — Her closeness to Leon provokes Gilgamesh’s anger. She later impales both combatants with a single sword thrust 352 366.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Opening Confrontation
Gilgamesh participates in the staged elimination of one Hassan before Leon’s freezing of the Matou residence attracts his attention. Tokiomi initially persuades him to delay revealing his strength 219.
He subsequently attacks Leon, Iskandar, and Kariya together, escalating from Gate of Babylon to Ea when Kariya resists the bombardment. Leon’s release of Excalibur’s restraints excites him, but Tokiomi’s Command Spell forces him to withdraw 239 240 241.
Kirei’s Awakening and New Contract
Gilgamesh encourages Kirei to investigate the other Masters’ wishes and confront his own desires. At the kings’ gathering, he debates the Grail with Iskandar and Leon, then proposes a competition to recover Tokiomi’s daughter 257 258 261 262 263.
After Kirei kills Tokiomi, Gilgamesh demands an entertaining reason to spare him. Their subsequent contract enables an alliance centered on pleasure rather than loyalty to Tokiomi’s objectives 271 275 329.
Aerial Battles over Fuyuki
Gilgamesh tests Leon’s divine defensive realm with thousands of treasures, but an interruption prevents their escalation to stronger weapons. During the sea-demon crisis, he destroys pursuing fighter aircraft and battles Kariya’s Black Fighter, replacing ineffective beam attacks with treasury bombardment 277 283 284.
Duel with Iskandar
At Mount Enzou, Gilgamesh shares a final drink with Iskandar and refuses his alliance proposal. He allows Ionioi Hetairoi to manifest before destroying it with Ea, then binds the advancing king with the Chains of Heaven and kills him. Their final exchange retains mutual respect 338 339 340 341 342.
Final Battle and Defeat
Leon counters Gilgamesh’s treasury outside Ryuudou Temple, while Kariya interrupts their confrontation and draws Gilgamesh into another aerial battle. Gilgamesh eventually returns with Kariya’s seized Ebony Blade 352 353 354 355 360.
In the direct battle, Ea destroys Leon’s Shadow Realm, but Leon’s physical strength leaves Gilgamesh critically injured. Kirei’s death triggers the mana influx that restores him, enabling a world-fracturing clash between Enuma Elish and Bi-frost 363 364 365.
Both survive the devastating exchange at Mount Enzou. Gilgamesh restrains Leon and prepares to execute him, but Sakura’s final Command Spell revives Leon’s resistance. Artoria’s intervention then pierces both fighters 366.
Still alive, Gilgamesh turns Ea against All the World’s Evil. He is immobilized while witnessing Leon’s return as the Third Magician, then loses the final confrontation: Leon captures him, destroys Ea, and sends him back to the Throne of Heroes 368 370 372.

Namesake
- The name Gilgamesh also appears for an Eternal fighter in the Avengers–Eternals battle. He fights Tony bare-handed, becomes distracted by Ikaris’s defeat, and receives a magnetically enhanced punch that knocks out two teeth and sends him crashing into Ikaris’s crater. Tony remarks on the extraordinary hardness of his bones, and Ajak moves the Eternal ship forward to support the defeated warriors 595.
