Background

Adoption and identity crisis

Loki was found as an abandoned Frost Giant infant after Odin’s war against Jotunheim. Odin adopted him, raised him as his son beside Thor, and used divine power to conceal his Frost Giant nature. 116 455

During Thor’s coronation, Loki’s jealousy drove him to reveal a hidden route into Asgard to Laufey and the Frost Giants. Their attack on Odin’s Vault disrupted the ceremony; Loki then pushed Thor into attacking Jotunheim. 85

In Jotunheim, Loki discovered that Frost Giant ice could not harm him. He later used the Casket of Ancient Winters to verify his heritage, seeing his Frost Giant form for the first time. Odin nevertheless affirmed that Loki would always be his son before collapsing into Odinsleep. 85

First bid for the throne

With Odin incapacitated and Thor banished to Earth, Loki became acting king. He planned to keep Thor on Midgard permanently, destroy Jotunheim, and secure the throne before anyone could expose his origins. 85

Loki ultimately revealed himself to Thor as a Frost Giant, commanded the Destroyer Armor against him, and attempted to kill his brother. Protected by the Casket’s frost, he initially resisted Leon, Arcee, and Bast, but lost the artifact’s protection and was defeated and humiliated. 90

He later admitted that he had conspired with Laufey to kill Odin during Odinsleep, claiming he wanted to prove himself worthy of Asgard’s throne. 91

Imprisonment, manipulation, and the Chitauri plot

While imprisoned, Loki accepted Leon’s offer to help maneuver Thor and the Asgardians in exchange for the prospect of kingship. Leon gave him the paired short swords Lion’s Teeth, though Loki immediately hid them with magic rather than trust the gift. 95

Loki participated in Leon’s staged Ebony Maw persona, performing defiance before S.H.I.E.L.D. before using illusion magic to make his apparent submission to the Mind Scepter convincing. 148

During the Chitauri invasion of New York, he alternated between manipulation, escape attempts, and reluctant cooperation. He eventually stole the Mind Scepter from Leon’s Ebony Maw disguise and raced toward Stark Tower. 160 161

Ragnarok and kingship

After Hela’s return, Loki was temporarily released from prison to help Thor find Odin and Frigga. He supported Thor during their confrontation with Hela, though both brothers were overwhelmed after Hela shattered Mjolnir. 446 450

Exiled with Thor into a boundless dark prison dimension, Loki attempted teleportation magic without a Sling Ring. Though his first attempt failed, he later succeeded after Ancient One accelerated his training. 454 455

Thor later relinquished his own claim to Asgard’s throne and urged Loki to become king, citing Loki’s intelligence and the respect he had earned by resisting Hela. Loki accepted the role and rebuilt Asgard through divine magic. 516 533

Appearance

Loki normally appears in Odin’s Asgardian disguise, but his Frost Giant form manifests ice-blue skin when he releases or verifies his true heritage. 85 90

  • Frost Giant blue skin, revealed while wielding the Casket of Ancient Winters. 90
  • Frequently uses green illusion magic to alter his appearance, create doubles, or conceal objects. 95 154
  • Has maintained an elaborate hairstyle even after severe falls and imprisonment. 144
  • Uses Lion’s Teeth as both weapons and airborne footholds. 447

Personality

Loki is driven by a long-standing need for recognition, belonging, and authority. His early resentment of Thor’s public favor, combined with fear that his Frost Giant identity would cost him everything, led him to sabotage Thor’s coronation and seek the throne through deception. 85

He is highly adaptive when outmatched. Loki shifts rapidly from defiance to performance, cooperation, or submission when survival demands it, but continues calculating for opportunities to regain leverage. 144 148

His arrogance remains pronounced, particularly around his magical talent. After inheriting the Time Stone, he calls himself the greatest sorcerer in the Nine Realms and pursues magic as a field of mastery rather than merely a means of causing chaos. 455 655

Despite his rivalry with Thor, Loki repeatedly shows concern for his brother and Asgard. Their shared exile deepens their cooperation, and Loki later fights Hela alongside Thor and helps lead Asgard’s reconstruction. 454 500 533

  • Gains explicit cold immunity through Frost Affinity. 95
  • Endures severe physical punishment, though repeated humiliation and restraint affect him psychologically. 90 160

Illusion Magic

  • Alters his own form and conceals objects, including Lion’s Teeth. 95 154
  • Creates realistic decoys capable of deceiving Thor’s sight and touch. 173
  • Uses illusions to fake his death, evade attacks, and mislead opponents. 500 654
  • Can create numerous clones with distinct behavior and appearance. 655
  • Illusions are less reliable against perception abilities such as Leon’s Ultra Instinct. 173

Tangible Illusion

By combining Kamar-Taj construct magic with his own illusion magic, Loki developed illusions that possess physical substance.

  • Creates clones that can be touched, struck, and mistaken for his real body. 655
  • Can transform clones into convincing copies of Thor, including imitation Stormbreakers. 655
  • May permanently solidify an illusionary clone, though doing so exceeds his normal magical reserves. 655
  • A fully functional imitation of a divine weapon is theoretically possible but requires immense power and would collapse after a single strike. 655

Sorcery and dimensional magic

As Sorcerer Supreme, Loki employs Kamar-Taj magic alongside Asgardian illusion craft.

  • Opens portals even without a Sling Ring, though doing so was initially extremely difficult. 454 455
  • Casts defensive arrays capable of safely stopping Thor’s uncontrolled fall. 654
  • Creates and controls a Mirror Dimension that can trap multiple opponents without warning. 655
  • Restores damaged surroundings within his controlled dimension. 656

  • His position as Sorcerer Supreme grants him access to Kamar-Taj’s magical library. 455 464
  • Wong refuses to directly teach him forbidden time magic, but confirms that Loki may access any text in the library. 464
  • Leon is later stated to obtain the Time Stone, while another later account depicts Loki displaying it as King of Asgard and Sorcerer Supreme. 619 657

Swordsmanship and mechanical improvisation

Loki supplements his magic with blades, mobility tricks, and opportunistic use of technology.

  • Uses Lion’s Teeth for close combat, projectile attacks, and aerial movement. 176 447
  • Teleports himself and the blades around opponents before attacking with invisible cuts. 176
  • Uses the paired blades as airborne platforms, riding them like a skateboard. 447
  • Relies on mechanics and strategy when direct divine strength is insufficient. 176
