"Am I dead? Perhaps." Cheng Jue murmured to himself. He could clearly feel that he was lying in a space resembling a coffin.
Outside the space was nothing but chaos—no time, no space, no matter.
Perhaps because of the space Cheng Jue was in, he could clearly feel himself drifting through this void.
After a very, very long time—ten thousand years, a million years, a hundred million years, perhaps—Cheng Jue's consciousness gradually blurred and fell into slumber amid the endless passage of time.
But Cheng Jue did not know that, far away in the direction he drifted, a colossal giant stood with his feet upon the earth and his hands supporting the heavens. If Cheng Jue had still been awake, he would have recognized that the giant before him was Pangu from the myths and legends.
When chaos first began, there were no living beings or myriad things. Heaven and earth were one expanse, and within it grew a Chaos Green Lotus. It had five leaves, a flower of twenty-four grades, and bore a single lotus seed.
After countless hundreds of millions of years, the lotus seed gave birth to a divine being named Pangu.
Dissatisfied with the endless oppression of chaos, Pangu used the Heaven-Opening Axe to split heaven and earth apart.
After heaven and earth were first opened, they remained unstable. Thus, the great god Pangu held up the sky with his head and stood upon the earth with his feet. He grew one zhang taller each day, causing the sky to rise one zhang higher and the earth to thicken one zhang more each day. After eighteen thousand years, heaven and earth took shape.
And now, eighteen thousand years had passed since Pangu opened heaven and earth. The world had stabilized, but Pangu was nearly exhausted. He looked reluctantly upon the world he had created, already intending to nourish heaven and earth with himself.
Just then, an object resembling a tree root flew past Pangu's eyes. An ordinary person would only have seen it as a mere tree root.
But who was Pangu? He was already a mighty being who had stepped onto the path of attaining the Dao. In an instant, he saw through the tree root's outward appearance. What appeared before him was a vast body of information; rather than a tree root, it was more like an anchor point for a world.
Knowledge from an unfamiliar world appeared before Pangu just like that.
After an unknown amount of time, Pangu's joyful cry rang out through chaos. "Excellent."
After speaking, Pangu looked upon the desolate world he had created and said, "Since I have already taken this step, everything I currently possess is of no further use. I might as well give it to the world I created."
With that, he transformed his body into the Primordial World: his left eye became the sun, his right eye became the moon, and his hair became countless stars;
His blood became rivers, lakes, and seas, while his muscles became fertile plains stretching for thousands of miles;
His bones became grass and trees, while his sinews became roads;
His teeth became gold and stone, while his marrow became pearls;
His breath became wind and clouds, his voice became thunder, and his sweat became rain and dew. When the great god Pangu fell, his head and limbs became the Five Sacred Mountains, while his spine became the pillar of heaven and earth, the Buzhou Mountain Range...
His navel became a sea of blood spanning tens of thousands of li. Within it, bloody waves surged; fish and shrimp could not thrive, and birds and insects would not approach. All the violent malice between heaven and earth gathered there, and the people of the Primordial World called it the Netherworld Blood Sea.
At the moment Pangu's body fell, a Primordial Spirit escaped from him and divided into three, along with twelve drops of essence blood. The three into which it divided would become the future Three Pure Ones, while those twelve drops of essence blood would likely become the future Ancestral Witches.
Yet at this moment, unlike what the myths recorded, a spiritual light appeared among them and transformed into an illusory figure of Pangu.
The illusory Pangu clenched his hand. "I never expected that after taking the final step, I would actually survive. Although I successfully attained the Dao, the price was so immense."
Just then, a supreme will descended through chaos. Pangu looked over. "Great Dao."
The Eye of the Great Dao emerged within chaos and bestowed upon Pangu an immense amount of Great Dao Merit.
Seeing the Great Dao Merit fly toward him, Pangu shook his head. "What use is Great Dao Merit to me now?" With a wave of his hand, he divided the merit the Great Dao had just bestowed into several portions.
One portion of merit was given to the part of the Primordial Spirit that had divided into three.
One portion of merit was given to the twelve drops of essence blood.
One portion of merit became the Heaven-and-Earth Exquisite Pagoda.
One portion of merit became the Hongmeng Measuring Heaven Ruler.
Pangu had been about to scatter the remaining merit across the Primordial World when he remembered that he owed his successful attainment of the Dao to the tree root that had drifted over from chaos.
Thus, Pangu divided half of the remaining Heaven-Opening Merit and gave it to the tree root that had saved him.
Pangu could clearly sense an exceedingly weak consciousness within the tree root. That consciousness was Cheng Jue. Thus, Pangu casually drew a circle near the center of the world he had opened and planted the tree root there.
After doing all this, Pangu said, "I hope that when we meet again, you will have stepped into this realm just as I have." With that, Pangu vanished into chaos.
After Pangu disappeared, the Heaven-and-Earth Exquisite Pagoda followed the three Primordial Spirits and fled into the Primordial World. The twelve drops of essence blood fell beneath Buzhou Mountain at the center of the Primordial World's continent. The Hongmeng Measuring Heaven Ruler, meanwhile, fell in Cheng Jue's direction.
