Background / History

Cheng Jue was originally a man from Earth with a childhood lung illness. After collapsing while playing games, he awakened reincarnated as a sapling in an unfamiliar wasteland, unable to move because his feet had become roots and his arms branches 2.

Before this rebirth, Cheng Jue's consciousness drifted in the void and witnessed Pangu create and stabilize heaven and earth. After attaining the Dao, Pangu planted a tree root containing Cheng Jue's consciousness at the center of the new world before departing into chaos 1.

As a tree, Cheng Jue spent centuries alone absorbing ambient energy and experimenting with circulation methods within his plant body. Heaven-Opening Merit hidden in his sea of consciousness protected him from the dangers of these early experiments, allowing him to develop a rudimentary breathing technique 2. His fruit first produced Knotweed Grass, earning merit from heaven and revealing his capacity to create life 2 4.

Cheng Jue later learned that he was a World Tree and awakened the Grotto-Heaven Pearl and Hongmeng Measuring Heaven Ruler as companion spiritual treasures. The World Tree's inheritance further revealed that he could recreate selected game characters and items from his former life, although creating humans was forbidden and certain creations required the appropriate bloodline or technical knowledge 3 4.

Appearance

In tree form, Cheng Jue began as a sapling slightly over one meter tall before growing into an enormous World Tree that appeared to connect heaven and earth. Its leaves shine with spiritual light, while its body radiates the dark-yellow glow of Merit 2 4.

In humanoid form, Cheng Jue resembles the female manifestation of her primordial spirit: a striking, elf-like woman with long black hair, pale skin, clear eyes, and pointed ears 4 8.

  • Towering World Tree body capable of bearing life-creating fruits 2 5
  • Dark-yellow Merit radiance surrounding the tree form 4
  • Long black hair and small pointed ears in Shenhe-Type humanoid form 8
  • Commonly appears to Travelers as the Goddess of Life 20 43

Personality

Cheng Jue is cautious and pragmatic. Early in the Primordial World, they feared being discovered and harvested by stronger immortals, relied on the Grotto-Heaven Pearl's concealment, and abandoned attempts to create humans rather than risk interfering with forces such as Nuwa, Hongjun, or the Heavenly Dao 2 3 4.

Despite this caution, Cheng Jue is deeply protective of their creations. They treat Xiao Yi and Xiao Meng as family, entrust the Elves' education to reliable guardians, and seek greater strength specifically to protect the lifeforms they have made 4 5 44. Their concern extends to Travelers, whom they protect with Humanity Marks and resurrection systems even while privately regarding them as “little leeks” for the growth of Humanity Dao 18 21.

Cheng Jue is also curious and adaptive, readily applying knowledge from their former life to cultivation, civilization-building, and game design. This inventiveness produced the Myriad Spirits Profound Light Record, the Humanity Dao, and the World Tree game system 4 12 15.
