"Can't get out? How is that possible?!"
The bald middle-aged man in the back seat finally found a chance to show off. He puffed out his fat belly and put on an official air. "I'm the police chief. It's just leaving the city—let me make a call."
Men always liked showing off in front of beautiful women. Even if there was no chance for anything to happen yet, it had nothing to do with anything else. It was an instinct carved into their DNA, like what certain birds did during courtship.
The call connected. Before the police chief could say more than a few words, his eyes suddenly widened. "What do you mean I've already resigned to take responsibility? Why don't I know about that?"
The other party clearly had no interest in listening to his nonsense and hung up directly, leaving the chief... the former chief completely dumbfounded and at a loss.
"Umbrella Corporation controls everything. At the very least, all the officials are their people. Stop struggling." Xiao Miao sighed helplessly, glanced at the mission progress on the panel, then looked up at Jill. "We have to save ourselves. We need to find the weakest part of the city wall and escape!"
"Impossible. And how did you know all this?" The former chief looked unconvinced.
Who said all the higher-ups belonged to Umbrella Corporation? At least he wasn't one. If what Xiao Miao said was true, then he had been too much of a failure.
They were all high-ranking government officials, so why hadn't Umbrella Corporation included him? Was it because he didn't like little girls?
Damn it, they could have just said so. It wasn't like they couldn't discuss it. He could get into that too.
"Because I'm a reporter. I've been investigating Umbrella Corporation for a long time. Also, fatty, you'd better shut up." Xiao Miao shot a contemptuous glance toward the back seat.
Compared with the former chief, who had no self-awareness whatsoever, the other two hitchhiking passengers were much quieter and kept their mouths shut.
"Fat... fatty?" The former chief's eyes widened in disbelief.
He had been police chief for so many years, yet this was the first time anyone had dared call him fatty—and to his face, no less. "How dare you..."

The sound of a gun being cocked rang out. Xiao Miao toyed with his pistol and turned to ask, "What did you say?"
"...Nothing."
Xiao Miao nodded in satisfaction, then noticed Jill sneaking glances at him. He turned to ask, "Officer, would you like to inspect my press credentials?"
"No need. I believe you." Jill shook her head. "As it happens, I know a place with maps and plenty of guns. Hold on tight."
After the police car turned onto a side road, it abruptly accelerated, with the two police cars behind them following close behind.
As the T-virus spread through the city, more and more zombies flooded the streets. Multi-car pileups, gas explosions—Raccoon City had become a living hell.
A twenty-minute trip took them a full hour.
They endured several assaults by zombie hordes along the way, and the convoy was completely scattered. Xiao Miao had long since taken out the assault rifle he had prepared in his backpack and emptied all its ammunition.
The setting sun was blood-red, as if the blood within the city had dyed the sky crimson. At 5:10 in the afternoon, the police car finally arrived at a gun shop.
Robert Kendo Gun Shop, also the official weapons supplier for the S.T.A.R.S. special forces.
It was a low, plain building with a battered sign. From the outside, it looked no different from a rural motel, but there was more to it inside. The stored firearms and ammunition were enough to support a small-scale war.
After parking and turning off the engine, Jill looked at the rifle in Xiao Miao's hands. "Are you really a reporter? Not an FBI agent on assignment?"
Xiao Miao rolled his eyes. "I will never forgive the FBI. They keep warning me at the beginning of movies."
Jill instantly understood. She reached out and gave Xiao Miao's thigh a squeeze. "No wonder you're so thin."
Then she unbuckled her seat belt, stepped out of the car in her high heels, and left Xiao Miao with a beautiful view of her back.
Xiao Miao: "???"
Had she just flirted with him?
This was outrageous. He had to find a chance to flirt back!
The gun shop was pitch-black inside. Its second gun at twenty percent off sign had fallen to the floor, and the front doors were tightly shut, making it look as though the shop had closed for the day.
But that was impossible!
Just as Kabukicho in Japan never closed on weekends, this was the United States, and today wasn't even a weekend. There was no way a gun shop would close!
The five of them entered the gun shop in single file. Jill led the way, followed by the former chief, then the two ordinary civilians—a man and a woman—while Xiao Miao brought up the rear with his pistol clenched tightly in hand.
The gun shop's main hall was empty. A vase had been shattered, the newspaper stand had been knocked over, and debris was scattered across the floor. It was obvious some kind of disturbance had taken place here.
Just as Xiao Miao, the last one, entered through the front door, a burst of weapons being cocked suddenly sounded. More than a dozen figures rushed out from every corner, raising rifles and handguns at the five of them.
"Whoa, whoa, don't shoot! We're normal people!" the former chief shouted in panic, terrified that someone might accidentally pull the trigger.
Xiao Miao's body tensed as he focused his mind on [Character Card: Elf Princess Aya]. At the slightest sign of trouble, he would use it immediately.
He had a rough idea who these people were, but he didn't dare gamble.
After two seconds of silence, a voice broke the deadlock. "Jill, welcome back to the team."
An elderly man made his way through the crowd, walked up to Jill, and handed her a shotgun.
Jill took the shotgun and expertly chambered a round. Turning to the other four, she said, "Don't worry. None of them were bitten."
As she spoke, Jill tipped her chin toward Xiao Miao. "This handsome reporter is pretty capable, and he's a good shot too. He deserves some decent gear."
The old man in military uniform nodded. Everyone lowered their weapons at once, their movements neat and disciplined.
At the sight of this, the former chief and the two civilians immediately breathed a sigh of relief, their sense of security greatly restored.
After a brief round of introductions, everyone learned each other's identities and confirmed the group's situation.
Jill and the soldiers stationed at the gun shop naturally needed no introduction. They were S.T.A.R.S., short for Special Tactics and Rescue Service, under the Raccoon City Police Department.
As for the other four, including Xiao Miao: a police chief with a body comparable to a pregnant woman's, a reporter of mysterious origins, a woman claiming to be a reporter, and a Black parking lot attendant.
The chief, the female reporter, and the Black attendant each received a handgun, while Xiao Miao received a full set of tactical equipment.
"Hey, man, did you borrow this gun from some museum?"
A special forces officer with a crew cut picked up Xiao Miao's assault rifle, his face full of disdain. "It looks older than my grandmother!"
Xiao Miao: "...The World War II museum."
That was what being broke was like. Having a gun to use was already good enough. Plenty of people didn't even have his conditions.
A black shadow arced through the air toward Xiao Miao, followed by Jill's voice.
"Xiao, catch!"
Xiao Miao hurriedly caught it and found that it was a set of black special tactical uniform.
Jill stood at the changing room entrance, tilting her head toward the inside as she looked at Xiao Miao. "Come in. Don't tell me you want to change out here?"
Whistles immediately rose and fell throughout the gun shop.
The old team leader patted Xiao Miao on the shoulder and winked at him. "Kid, seize the chance. Jill has high standards."
Xiao Miao was pushed into the changing room in a daze.
Once the door closed, the atmosphere in the cramped changing room immediately turned suggestive.
Jill took off her high heels and walked toward Xiao Miao barefoot, her perfect arches leaving a string of footprints on the floor.
