The power system of the One Piece World was divided into physical arts, Haki, and Devil Fruits. Devil Fruits were hard to come by and had the fatal weakness of fearing seawater.
Physical arts and Haki were the true foundation. Roger, Garp, and Shanks—those powerhouses standing at the pinnacle of the seas—were all masters of physical arts and Haki.
Kahn closed his eyes and tried to sense his body. An infant's meridians were fragile and its muscles slack; there was simply no way to carry out any substantive training.
But he could breathe.
In his previous life, he had read some theories about breathing techniques. Through specific breathing rhythms, one could increase lung capacity, promote blood circulation, and even awaken the body's potential.
Kahn began adjusting his breathing. Inhale, pause, exhale.
At first, this deliberate control made his chest feel tight and left him short of breath, nearly causing him to pass out. But he did not give up. He kept adjusting his rhythm, searching for the frequency best suited to his current body.
Several hours later, Kahn finally found a steady, prolonged breathing pattern. With every breath, he could feel a faint current of warmth flowing through his body.
Perhaps this was the unique energy of this world, or the foundation of Life Return.
The next morning, the storm subsided.
On the merchant ship's deck, Bogart lowered the brim of his hat as he watched a ship bearing the World Government's flag appear on the horizon.
"Vice Admiral, it's a Cipher Pol search vessel." Bogart pushed open the hold door and reported to Garp.
Garp sat atop a wooden crate, holding a baby bottle. "Tell them to get lost. Say this is a secret merchant vessel transporting Marine supplies."
Bogart looked troubled. "They're CP0 agents. The one leading them wears a mask. They insist on boarding for an inspection, and their attitude is very forceful. If you don't show yourself, they may force their way aboard."
Garp stood and set the bottle on the table. "I can't show my face right now. Once CP0 sees me here, the secret of Roger's child won't stay hidden."
"Leave it to me." Bogart pressed a hand to the hilt of his sword and turned toward the deck.
In the hold, Kahn heard their conversation. CP0? The World Government's highest-ranking intelligence agency. If they discovered them, he and Ace would undoubtedly die.
Just then, Ace beside him seemed to be hungry. He opened his mouth, ready to burst into tears.
Kahn was alarmed. If Ace made a sound now, it would definitely draw CP0's attention.
An infant's body could not perform complex movements. Kahn could only wave his tiny arms desperately, roll over, and move close to Ace.
He covered Ace's mouth with his little hand.
Ace struggled, letting out muffled whimpers.
Kahn focused and guided the faint energy he had just figured out through his palm. He was not sure whether it would work, but he had to try.
Miraculously, Ace quieted down. That faint warm current seemed to soothe him. He blinked, closed his eyes again, and fell into a deep sleep.
On deck, Bogart faced off against the CP0 agents.
"This ship is classified Marine property. No one is permitted to search it." Bogart drew his longsword, its blade flashing with cold light beneath the sun.
The CP0 agent in a white mask sneered. "The World Government's orders supersede everything. Even if it were carrying Heavenly Tribute, we would still inspect it. Step aside, or be charged with treason."
The agent took a step forward, and the black-clad men behind him drew their weapons as well.
Bogart did not retreat. His sword tip pointed directly at the masked agent's throat. "You can try."
The tension was at its peak.
In the hold, Garp clenched his fist. If Bogart could not stop them, he would have no choice but to sink the entire CP0 ship. That would bring even greater trouble.
Just as both sides were about to make their move, the Den Den Mushi in the CP0 agent's arms rang.
"Purururururu..."
The agent answered the Den Den Mushi. A low voice came from within. "The target has appeared in the North Blue. Head there immediately to provide support."
The agent hung up and glanced at Bogart. "You're lucky. Withdraw."
The CP0 ship turned around and quickly vanished beyond the horizon.
The crisis was over.
In the hold, Garp loosened his fist. He walked to the cradle and saw a surprising sight.
Kahn's little hand rested over Ace's mouth, and both babies were sleeping soundly.
Garp scratched his head, his gaze deepening. He had always felt there was something unusual about Kahn. Then he turned to Bogart, who had just pushed open the door and entered.
"Full speed ahead," Garp ordered. "Leave these waters as soon as possible."
The voyage continued for a full two months.
During those two months, Kahn practiced his breathing technique every day in the cradle within the hold. The rolling waves and pitching ship did not affect his concentration in the slightest.
His appetite was enormous, nearly twice Ace's. The goat's milk Garp had brought was quickly depleted. To ensure the two babies received enough nutrition, Garp had no choice but to have the sailors dive into the sea every day to catch fresh deep-sea fish, which they simmered into thick fish soup for them.
Kahn's body developed at a speed far beyond reason. At only two months old, his bones were already exceptionally sturdy, and the outlines of muscles could faintly be seen in his arms and legs. His eyes no longer held a newborn's blank innocence, but the sharpness and scrutiny of an adult.
The merchant ship finally entered the waters of the East Blue and docked at the edge of the Goa Kingdom. This was Foosha Village, a quiet and peaceful little village, free from the clamor and slaughter of the Grand Line. The air was filled with the fragrance of grass and earth.
Garp wrapped the two children in his broad cape and strode down the gangplank.
Village chief Slap, wearing his signature striped hat and leaning on a wooden cane, came forward to greet him.
"Garp! You old bastard, so you still know the way back!" The village chief raised his cane and unceremoniously smacked Garp's shin.
Garp burst into laughter, completely unconcerned by such a light blow. "Slap, I brought you a gift."
He lifted his cape, revealing the two babies in his arms.
The village chief was so shocked that his cane fell to the ground. His eyes widened round. "You... where did you kidnap these children from? And there are two of them!"
"They're my grandsons!" Garp declared shamelessly, his voice so loud that the birds in the trees flapped away in fright.
Kahn rolled his eyes inwardly. Who is your grandson?
The village chief leaned closer to inspect them, his face full of suspicion. "Grandsons? Did that brat Dragon get married?"
Garp coughed twice, refusing to answer directly as he crudely changed the subject. "Anyway, these two brats will be living in Foosha Village from now on. Find someone to take care of them."
The village chief sighed and bent down to pick up his cane. "You bastard, always dumping trouble on others. Margaret in the east of the village just gave birth and has plenty of milk. She can help feed them."
Garp nodded in agreement and strode toward the eastern end of the village.
And just like that, Kahn and Ace settled down in Foosha Village.
Margaret was a simple farm woman. Her husband had died in an accident while fishing at sea, leaving her to raise her own child alone.
As for the two babies Garp had brought, she treated them like her own and cared for them attentively.
Kahn's daily life was highly regimented: eating, sleeping, and practicing his breathing technique.
He discovered that the air in Foosha Village contained a peculiar energy. Whenever he took a deep breath and let the current circulate through his body, he could feel his bones and muscles gradually transforming.
No longer content to lie in his cradle, he began trying to roll over, crawl, and even stand while holding onto the wall.
Ace, on the other hand, was completely different. He cried and fussed all day, his boundless energy enough to give anyone a headache.
Whenever something displeased him, he would smash the wooden bowl or toy within reach to pieces. Margaret was often exhausted by his antics.
Kahn often sat on the wooden floor and watched coldly. He knew that Roger's blood flowed within Ace; that restless nature had begun to show itself even in infancy.
Days passed one after another. In the blink of an eye, Kahn and Ace turned one year old.
One-year-old Kahn could already walk independently with steady steps, and could even run around the yard.
The contours of his muscles displayed astonishing firmness beneath the sunlight, making him look nothing like a one-year-old child.
He began simple physical training around the village.
Early in the morning, when dawn had barely broken and a thin mist still drifted across the sea, Kahn wore rough cloth shorts and ran barefoot along the dirt roads circling the village.
The villagers had long since become accustomed to this strange child.
"Kahn really is a monster," the village chief sighed as he sat outside the tavern with a cup of morning tea, watching Kahn's receding figure.
Young Makino came out carrying a tray of freshly baked pastries, a gentle smile on her face. "Kahn is very well-behaved. He never causes trouble. Unlike Ace—he pulled out the village chief's beard again yesterday."
