Background / History

Thanos first appears as the power behind Loki's attempted conquest of Earth. He provides Loki with the Mind Scepter and the Chitauri army in exchange for the Tesseract, though Loki privately intends to use the arrangement to free himself from Thanos later 79. After the invasion fails, Thanos dismisses Loki as a weakling and concludes that he underestimated Earth—particularly Su Ming 114.

He commands Ronan to recover the Orb containing the Power Stone and treats both Ronan's failures and the deaths of subordinates with indifference. His authority is strong enough that Ronan struggles to breathe in his presence 219. When Ronan attempts to keep the Power Stone for himself, Thanos remains calm, warns him to reconsider, and ultimately treats the rebellion as an expected betrayal 240.

Thanos later begins personally gathering the Infinity Stones. He takes the Power Stone on Xandar, defeats Thor and Hulk aboard an Asgardian vessel, kills Heimdall, and claims the Space Stone from the Tesseract 372 374. Loki attempts to assassinate him but is effortlessly stopped by the Space Stone; Su Ming then intervenes, saves Loki, and forces Thanos to retreat rather than risk an uncertain battle 375.

After Su Ming saves Gamora from Vormir, Thanos bypasses the Soul Stone's sacrifice requirement by using the Time and Space Stones to abduct an alternate-universe Gamora. He sacrifices her without hesitation, gains the Soul Stone, and continues toward Earth for the Mind Stone 397 403.

Thanos completes the Infinity Gauntlet and performs the Snap, then withdraws to a remote world. When the surviving Avengers find him, he is severely scarred, unarmed, and tending a vegetable garden; the Gauntlet has been reduced to nearly powerless scrap 408 410 411.

A 2014 version of Thanos later learns of the Avengers' Time Heist through Nebula's linked memories. Seeing that halving life fails to create lasting order, he changes his objective from eliminating half of humanity to exterminating it entirely 469 477. After recognizing that Su Ming may be unbeatable even with the Infinity Stones, he abandons his original strategy and seeks power from the Destruction Law in the Annihilation Domain 536.

Appearance

Thanos is a towering, purple-skinned Titan whose usual appearance centers on heavy golden armor, a dark-gold helmet, and an imposing presence 219 372 537.

Personality

Thanos frames mass death as salvation and balance. He tells victims that their sacrifice should make them feel fortunate, presenting slaughter as a necessary moral duty rather than cruelty 374. Even after Loki's failed invasion, he remains emotionally detached because the loss of one city means little beside his long-held beliefs 114.

He is cold, commanding, and ruthlessly pragmatic. He ignores the killing of his own subordinate, threatens Ronan with death for another failure, and sacrifices an alternate Gamora solely because she fulfills the Soul Stone's requirement 219 403. His treatment of Gamora nevertheless reveals genuine attachment: he calls her his beloved daughter, and the Soul Stone recognizes his grief when he sacrifices her counterpart 219 397.

Thanos can reassess his plans when presented with failure. Future knowledge convinces him that his original “balance” is insufficient, while Su Ming's strength forces him to seek the Destruction Law's aid 477 536. That alliance ultimately strips away much of his identity, leaving him horrified at becoming a disposable vessel of destruction 554 565.
