Background / History

Bounty hunter on Xandar

Rocket and Groot were on Xandar when Rocket discovered a 40,000-unit bounty for Peter Quill. He immediately accepted the job, intending to capture Quill and become rich. 203

His tablet's navigation had an error margin of roughly one hundred kilometers, causing Rocket and Groot to arrive at a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier instead of Quill's location. Rocket responded by bombarding Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes with an oversized alien gun. 206

Su Ming separated the battle and later took Rocket and Groot to his base, where he temporarily controlled their bodies to keep the volatile pair under observation. Rocket fiercely resisted being treated like a pet. 207 208

Arrest and Kyln escape

After being transported to the Broker's planet, Rocket tried to take a display weapon loaded with volatile Explosive Magma. The weapon detonated, destroying the Broker's shop and surrounding buildings; Groot lost both arms while shielding Rocket from the blast. 209 210

Nova Corps arrested Rocket, Groot, Quill, Gamora, and Su Ming. During processing, Rocket was identified as Experimental Subject 89P13 and the product of illegal experimentation. 210

In Kyln Prison, Rocket devised the escape plan: obtain a guard wristband, an X-Stone Energy Battery, and the Broker's prosthetic leg. His insistence on the leg led Quill to accidentally sever the Broker's real leg instead. 219 220

Rocket modified the stolen battery and wristband while the group fought their way to the watchtower. He and Groot then helped turn the tower into the team's escape route. 221 222

Galaxy Guard Corps

Rocket joined Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Su Ming against Ronan. After Ronan's defeat, Tivan proposed the name “Galaxy Guard Corps” for the group. 238

During the defense of Xandar, Rocket protected civilians from Ronan's aerial attack. Survivors later remembered the Corps' members as their rescuers, with Rocket becoming recognizable to some as the “furry” warrior who saved them. 271 277

Ego conflict and Yondu's sacrifice

Appearance

Rocket is a small, fur-covered raccoon-like being with sharp teeth, gray-black paws, and a habit of carrying weapons far larger than himself. Experimental ports are visible across his bare back. 208 229 329

His hostility toward being called a “raccoon,” “bug,” or lesser creature stems from the trauma of being repeatedly dissected and rebuilt through experimentation. He reacts especially badly when others reduce him to a brainless animal. 229
