Background / History

Coronation, Jotunheim, and exile

On the day of Thor's intended coronation, Frost Giants infiltrated Asgard in an attempt to reclaim the Casket of Ancient Winters. Viewing the intrusion as a direct challenge to his authority, Thor led a retaliatory force into Jotunheim despite Odin's reluctance. His party was overwhelmed, forcing Odin to intervene and rescue them. 65

Odin judged Thor's pride and recklessness unworthy of kingship. He stripped Thor of his divine power, cast him out to Earth, and placed Mjolnir under an enchantment that would allow only the worthy to wield it. 65

Earthly exile and redemption

Powerless on Earth, Thor was struck by Jane Foster's car and later incapacitated by a high-powered pulse stun gun. His fall was especially humiliating because he had been defeated by electricity while deprived of his identity as the God of Thunder. 66

Thor met Jane Foster, Erik Selvig, and Daisy Johnson while searching for Mjolnir. His unfamiliarity with Midgard's customs—such as smashing a cup after enjoying its drink—initially made him seem arrogant and strange, though Erik recognized his noble bearing. 67

After infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.'s New Mexico base, Thor reached Mjolnir but could not lift it. The failure left him grief-stricken and convinced that his oldest companion no longer recognized him. 69
