Background and Cosmology

Tivan explains that six singularities existed before the universe’s birth. Their remnants became the Infinity Stones after the Big Bang. His later account identifies them as products of the seventh-generation universe, distinguishing them from the older Starcore Fragments—the surviving primordial foundations of the shattered First Firmament 230 280.

The Stones embody laws, while the Starcore Fragments predate those laws. Infinity Stone energy can activate the fragments for precise spacetime travel. This interaction first manifests around Su Ming when the Orb resonates with his stored Infinite Energy and nearby fragments, transporting his group across the stars 209 280.

Later revelations place the Stones below the Supreme Laws. The Cosmic Demon recognizes them as condensed universal rules that could produce a qualitative increase in power when combined with Starcore origins. To the Death Goddess, however, even these coveted artifacts are of little personal value 466 481.

The Soul Stone receives a more specific explanation: soul energy condenses into gemstones inside a dimensional vault associated with Death. Purple Jewel describes the location as a storage room and says its usual sacrificial access requirement does not apply to her and Gold Jewel 398 399.

New York and Su Ming’s First Absorption

The Tesseract and Mind Scepter anchor Loki’s invasion. Su Ming realizes their shared origin makes the scepter a means of shutting down the portal. His attempt instead creates an unexpected energy connection, allowing his Demigod Body to receive spatial energy through the scepter 104 109 111.

After the battle, Thor takes the Tesseract back to Asgard, where it is used to repair the Bifrost. Su Ming declines to seize it after discovering the System’s unfavorable exchange valuation and suspecting that its exchangeability may conceal a trap 113 122.

The Aether and Power Stone

Su Ming and Thor confront Malekith’s Aether, later explicitly identified as the Reality Stone. Su Ming’s energy-charged punch blasts it away from Malekith during the Convergence 130 258.

Tivan opens the Orb and explains the Stones’ origins before Carina’s fatal intervention. Ronan subsequently obtains the Power Stone and rejects his agreement to surrender it to Thanos. Su Ming eventually subdues its energy and returns it to the Orb; it is later entrusted to Xandar for safekeeping 230 240 276 388.

Thanos’s Collection and the Snap

Thanos takes the Power Stone from Xandar and the Space Stone from the Asgardian survivors. He then acquires Reality and forces Strange to surrender Time in exchange for Tony’s life. An alternate Gamora’s sacrifice secures Soul 372 374 395 401 403.

At Wakanda, Su Ming removes the Mind Stone from Vision, preserves him with soul energy, and throws the gem to Thanos. Its installation completes the six-Stone gauntlet. The subsequent Snap causes widespread disappearances, including Nick Fury and Maria Hill, while humanity blames Su Ming for enabling it 405 406 408.

The Time Heist

Five years later, the Avengers plan to retrieve Stones from the past, restore the vanished, and return the borrowed artifacts to their own timelines. Their rules prohibit altering the main course of history, contacting past selves, or delaying the Stones’ return 455 456 458.

The operation diverges sharply from its intended course. The Ancient One gives the Time Stone to Su Ming, who absorbs it. A Cosmic Demon impersonating Steve pursues the Mind Scepter, while Red Skull’s interference leaves Natasha dead and the Soul Stone in Thanos’s hands 469 471 475 487.

The Avengers recover the Tesseract in the Mongolian Gobi after TVA agents capture Loki. By their later regrouping, Su Ming holds Time and Mind, Thor supplies Reality, Steve supplies Space, and Rhodey supplies Power. Soul remains with Thanos 490 529 536.

Absorption and the Final Vormir Battle

Su Ming warns the Avengers that giving him their Stones will likely destroy their physical forms through absorption, making their return impossible. He nevertheless absorbs them, provoking Thanos and replacing the planned gauntlet-based confrontation with a battle between their integrated powers 537 538.

Five Stones sustain Su Ming against Thanos, who possesses Soul, Destruction energy, and eventually a stolen Starcore Fragment. Thanos’s final self-destruction combines Soul with the fragment and reduces Vormir to fundamental particles.
