Realm Structure

Body Tempering is divided into nine levels, also called Heavens. Entering the First Heaven marks the transition from an ordinary person into a Martial Artist, while the Ninth Heaven is the realm’s endpoint before True Qi cultivation begins. 9 16 190 228

Cultivation in this realm uses stances, martial forms, medicinal power, and Blood-Qi circulation to temper the body. Unlike True Qi cultivation, it relies on bodily movement and external forms rather than cross-legged meditation and the conversion of Blood-Qi into true qi. 10 228

Terminology

• The same subdivisions are referred to as Heavens, Layers, and Levels in different descriptions. 16 23
• The Fifth Heaven is described as a watershed: advancing beyond it requires far greater resource accumulation and produces a qualitative increase in strength. 90 100

Physical Characteristics

First Heaven

A First Heaven breakthrough gathers formerly loose Blood-Qi into an ordered force centered around the Dantian. The body undergoes rapid remolding across its muscles, bones, and meridians. 16

• Sharper hearing, sight, and touch.
• A casual jump can reach a ceiling more than three meters high.
• Muscle fibers and bones gain visibly greater density and explosive strength. 16

Second to Fifth Heaven

• At Second Heaven, Blood-Qi can be gathered and dispersed more smoothly according to the practitioner’s intent. 23
• At Third Heaven, the gap from the lower stages is already described as enormous. 43
• Fifth Heaven brings a major increase in physical power and is considered a dividing line in the Body Tempering path. 90 100

Sixth to Ninth Heaven

• At Sixth Heaven, the skin develops a faint bronze sheen, and the body’s toughness becomes markedly greater. 136
• At Seventh Heaven, muscles become sharply defined and strength can tear the air with a thunderous fist strike. 142 143
• At Eighth Heaven, a flick against the arm produces a metallic clang, likened to striking heavily tempered steel. 179
• Ninth Heaven represents the complete limit of Body Tempering before a practitioner must cultivate true qi to advance further. 190 228

Cultivation Requirements

• Blood-Qi and energy — Advancement requires enough accumulated energy to force open each realm barrier; Feng Chen’s progress repeatedly stalls from insufficient energy rather than lack of comprehension. 42 85 90
• Medicinal resources — Blood-Qi Medicinal Herbs, medicinal soups, pills, and demonic beast flesh or organs can supply the energy needed for tempering and breakthroughs. 23 85 100 179
• Suitable cultivation arts — A cultivation method must support the intended Heaven; no amount of resources can substitute for a method that does not reach the next stage. 44 111
• Physical endurance — Cultivation consumes tangible energy and causes intense hunger, exhaustion, heat, and strain on the muscles and bones. 10 11 190

Known Cultivation Arts

Transition to True Qi Realm

After reaching Body Tempering Ninth Heaven, further physical tempering alone cannot raise cultivation. Advancement requires a True Qi Realm secret manual and a new method: sitting in meditation, opening and widening meridians, and condensing Blood-Qi into true qi. 219 228

Feng Chen enters the True Qi Realm after obtaining the necessary manual, formally surpassing the Body Tempering Realm. 228
