Background
Rune physically crossed over from another world into the world of pirates. With no legal identity, he lived alone before joining the Whitebeard Pirates' First Division. His altered constitution and rare potential for Conqueror's Haki drew Marco's attention, and Marco began training him in combat and Haki. Rune also retained knowledge of future events, including Teach's planned murder of Thatch and theft of the Dark-Dark Fruit. 1
Determined to keep Thatch alive and avert the Whitebeard Pirates' collapse, Rune used Observation Haki to anticipate Teach's attack. He brought Vista to Thatch's room, accepted the Dark-Dark Fruit from Thatch, and ate it before Teach could steal it. Rune then deliberately downplayed the fruit's value so Teach would underestimate him. 2 3
Rune trained under Marco and then Whitebeard, enduring repeated defeats to develop his Haki. He eventually became commander of the newly formed Seventeenth Division, recruiting Bonney and working with Kuma after helping restore Kuma's consciousness. 5 12 14 16
After Teach attacked his companions and was expelled from the Whitebeard Pirates, Rune continued pursuing him. He later killed Teach after confronting him alongside Garp, ending the threat Rune had feared since arriving in the world. 10 34
Whitebeard eventually urged Rune and Ace not to remain under one another's command. Rune chose to establish the Dream Pirates, taking a newly built four-deck, three-masted ship as his own. He later accepted the World Government's offer to become a Seven Warlord for strategic reasons. 46 47 55 56
Appearance
Rune is described as a handsome man with a Whitebeard Pirates mark on his chest. In his normal form, he stands approximately 1.85 meters tall. 1 7 52
- Carries the Whitebeard Pirates emblem on his chest. 7
- In White Tiger form, grows to nearly ten meters tall. 52
- His transformed body is covered in white fur with black stripes. 52
- Develops a black-and-white tiger head, fangs, claws, and a large striped tail in transformed form. 52
Personality
Rune is fiercely protective of people he considers family. His earliest major goal was saving Thatch to prevent Ace from pursuing Teach and drawing the Whitebeard Pirates into a disastrous war. He consistently treats Whitebeard as his father and prioritizes protecting the crew over status or personal ambition. 1 5 34
He is highly strategic and willing to deceive or manipulate opponents when necessary. Rune concealed the Dark-Dark Fruit's true potential from Teach, staged events to mislead Kaido and the Marines, and accepted the Seven Warlord position for its practical advantages. 2 3 25 55
Rune can also be ruthless. He coerced Tashigi into surrendering to protect her crew, killed Teach despite his pleas, and generally intends to kill pirates he considers irredeemably evil. However, he distinguishes civilians from hostile pirates and repeatedly risks himself to rescue and protect ordinary people. 18 27 28 34 36
Abilities & Skills
Haki
Rune possesses all three forms of Haki and trained extensively under Marco and Whitebeard. 1 4 5
- Conqueror's Haki — Can suppress weaker opponents and coat his fists or weapons with Conqueror's Haki for concentrated attacks. 16 18 49
- Observation Haki — Warned him of the future in which Teach would kill both him and Thatch; Rune also uses it to sense nearby threats. 2 3
- Armament Haki — Uses it to reinforce his fists and body during combat. 4 20
- Conqueror's Haki Coating — Allows him to strike Devil Fruit users and powerful opponents with black-lightning-coated attacks. 16 25
Dark-Dark Fruit
Rune's first Devil Fruit is the Logia-type Dark-Dark Fruit. Unlike ordinary Logia users, he cannot evade attacks through elementalization and suffers doubled pain while in elemental form. 2
- Devil Fruit nullification — Can nullify another user's power through direct contact. 2
- Dark Erosion — Extends darkness onto an opponent's body to nullify their Devil Fruit without requiring close physical contact. 6
- Dark Water and Dark Liberation — Techniques he developed soon after consuming the fruit, though he initially lacked proficiency with them. 3
- Darkness concealment and isolation — Can seal an area in darkness, suppress his presence, and detect intruders approaching the darkness. 3 9
- Storage — Uses darkness as a pocket-like space to contain objects, including Shadow Severance and rescued civilians. 27 44
- Devil Fruit extraction — Discovered that the fruit can steal and accommodate other Devil Fruit powers; he extracted Akainu's Magma-Magma Fruit and Kid's Magnet-Magnet Fruit. 31 44 49
Cat-Cat Fruit, Mythical Zoan, White Tiger Form
Rune's second Devil Fruit grants a Mythical Zoan white tiger transformation. It greatly enhances his physical strength, speed, endurance, and size. 52
- White Tiger transformation — Grows from 1.85 meters to nearly ten meters tall. 52
- Wind manipulation — Can generate and control massive tornadoes and waterspouts. 52
- Enhanced combat power — Rune believes the form gives him enough raw power to block Akainu's Hound of Hades directly. 52
- Transformation drawback — His ordinary clothing cannot withstand the drastic increase in size. 52 53
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Rune's fighting style centers on direct, Haki-infused punches refined through repeated sparring with Marco, Whitebeard, Luffy, Ace, and Garp. 4 5 10 35
- Can fight Marco for more than ten minutes while Marco holds back. 4
- Defeated Smoker with a single Conqueror's Haki-enhanced punch. 18
- Overpowered Ace by absorbing his flames before striking him with Conqueror's Haki Coating. 25
- Clashed directly with Garp, though Garp judged him not yet at true powerhouse level. 35 55
Swordsmanship
Rune uses a blade as a practical tool for precise destruction rather than pursuing the title of swordsman. 43 49
- Can coat Shadow Severance in Conqueror's Haki, making his Haki easier to concentrate and control through the weapon. 49
- Defeated Momousagi in a direct blade clash while in White Tiger form. 54
- Has stated no interest in competing with Mihawk or Zoro for the world's greatest swordsman title. 25
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Shadow Severance — A heavy, black cursed odachi engraved with the character for “shadow.” It possesses a spirit, accepted Rune as its master, and is said to rival a Twenty-One Great Grade Blade in quality. 44 49
- Dream — Rune's four-deck, three-masted pirate ship, built at Water 7 with nearly one billion Beli. One deck was arranged to accommodate Shirahoshi. 45 46

- Tashigi — Initially coerced into serving Rune to protect her crew. She later travels with him, manages crew finances, and identifies Shadow Severance. 18 43 49
- Yamato — Companion and frequent collaborator. Their cooperation during the volcanic disaster earned Yamato's respect for Rune's leadership and priorities. 27 28
- Shirahoshi — Dream Pirates member whom Rune recruited from Fish-Man Island. He encourages her to explore the world and values her ability to communicate with Sea Kings. 40 46 49
