Background & History
Separation at Sabaody
Luffy causes chaos at the Sabaody Archipelago after striking a Celestial Dragon, then is sent to Amazon Lily by Bartholomew Kuma. Rune identifies his likely location through Observation Haki and travels there with Ace to find him. 6 7
When found, Luffy is weakened after eating mushroom-growing grass and is covered in mushrooms. Upon waking, his first concern is the safety of Zoro, Nami, Vivi, and his other companions; he blames himself for being too weak to protect them. 7
Ace’s arrival reunites the brothers. Rune persuades Luffy to train for two years with the Whitebeard Pirates, use the resulting news coverage to signal his crew, and reunite with them later at Sabaody. Luffy accepts the plan. 7 8
Whitebeard Pirates Training
Luffy returns to Sabaody with Rune and Ace, where they stage a public clash with Kuma to create world news. Though Luffy does not fight Kuma directly, he wears his straw hat and prepares the intended signal for his scattered crew. 8
Teach later attempts to abduct Luffy from the Moby Dick and hand him to the Marines for a Seven Warlord position. Rune anticipates the attack, hides Luffy in darkness, and exposes Teach before the Whitebeard Pirates. 9 10
Rune subsequently uses Luffy as a sparring partner. Luffy demonstrates Gear Second and attempts Gear Third, but Rune stops the latter before it can damage the Moby Dick. Rune advises him to combine the speed of Gear Second, the enlargement of Gear Third, and Armament Haki rather than relying solely on his Devil Fruit. 10
Luffy permits Rune to borrow the Thousand Sunny as the temporary vessel of the Whitebeard Pirates’ Seventeenth Division, trusting him to protect it until the Straw Hat crew returns. 12
Training and Travel with Rune
After Kuma is captured and restored, Luffy continues accompanying Rune’s group aboard the Thousand Sunny. Rune reveals that Luffy’s fruit is actually the Mythical Zoan Nika Fruit and advises him to keep that knowledge secret while focusing on Haki and Gear Fourth. 17
Under Rune’s guidance, Luffy develops Gear Fourth. His Haki continues to improve, but he makes no progress with Conqueror’s Haki Coating during this period. 20
During Akainu’s trap, Luffy remains aboard the Thousand Sunny under Tashigi’s guard while Rune and Yamato investigate a supposed pirate attack. Akainu’s true target is implied to be Luffy or Kuma. 29 30
Luffy later meets his grandfather, Garp, who immediately punches him into the ground. Luffy challenges Garp in Gear Fourth but is effortlessly defeated by Garp’s Conqueror’s and Armament Haki-coated Fist Bone. 33 34
Departure for Further Training
Luffy accompanies Rune’s crew to Fish-Man Island and Water 7, where he helps Rune seek a shipwright for a new vessel. Both understand that Rune’s crew and the Straw Hat crew will eventually go their separate ways. 36 42
When Rune establishes an independent pirate crew, he sends Luffy and the Thousand Sunny back to Whitebeard so that Whitebeard can continue training him. Rune considers Luffy’s potential—and the future importance of the Nika Fruit—to exceed even his own and Ace’s. 47
Personality
Luffy is intensely devoted to his companions. After being separated from the Straw Hat crew, he is distraught by his inability to protect them and immediately wants to find them, even while still weakened. 7
He is straightforward, trusting, and often struggles with complex explanations or strategy. He accepts Rune’s plans largely because Ace trusts Rune, while Rune and Ace repeatedly have to clarify basic metaphors or battle advice for him. 8 10
Despite his immaturity, Luffy recognizes his weakness and accepts the need for long-term training. He remains unwavering in his ambition to become Pirate King, even when confronted by Garp. 7 34
Abilities & Skills
Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit
Luffy’s Devil Fruit is the Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Nika Form, not the Gum-Gum Fruit as he previously believed. Rune describes its core concept as freedom: the ability to stretch, shrink, and reshape like rubber. 17
- His Nika transformation cannot be accessed until the fruit awakens. 17
- Rune considers the Nika Fruit essential to the eventual struggle against Imu. 7 16
- Knowledge of the fruit’s true identity is kept secret because it would make Luffy a greater target. 17
Gear Second and Gear Third
Luffy uses Gear Second to substantially enhance his physical speed and striking power. 10
- Gear Second is insufficient against Rune, who can keep pace with him and overwhelm him in close combat. 10
- He attempts to activate Gear Third during their spar, but Rune cancels his Devil Fruit ability before the attack can damage the ship. 10
Gear Fourth
Luffy develops Gear Fourth after receiving Rune’s instruction to combine Haki with his Devil Fruit abilities. 17 20
- He can use Gear Fourth proficiently by the time Rune forms the Dream Pirates. 47
- Gear Fourth is still decisively outmatched by Garp’s Haki-coated attack. 34
- He has not yet learned to coat his attacks with Conqueror’s Haki. 20 27
Haki
Luffy possesses all three forms of Haki and later masters their basic use. 27
- Armament Haki — Used in conjunction with Gear Fourth and his physical attacks. 10 17
- Observation Haki — Part of his completed Three Types of Haki training. 27
- Conqueror’s Haki — Strong enough to affect ordinary opponents, but still below Rune’s level and not yet usable as an attack coating. 16 20 40
Relationships
- Ace — Older brother. Ace proudly speaks of Luffy, reunites with him on Amazon Lily, and helps bring him under Whitebeard’s protection. 4 7 8
- Rune L. Fox — Ally, rescuer, sparring partner, and mentor. Rune rescues Luffy from Amazon Lily, protects him from Teach, reveals the truth of his Devil Fruit, and guides his Haki and Gear Fourth training. 7 9 10 17
- Garp — Grandfather. Garp is harsh toward Luffy’s pirate life, greets him with a punch, and tests his strength without restraint. 33 34
- Whitebeard — Mentor by arrangement. Rune sends Luffy to Whitebeard for continued training after founding his own crew. 47
- Bartholomew Kuma — Initially regarded by Luffy as an enemy, though Rune explains that Kuma scattered the Straw Hats to protect them. Kuma later protects and transports Luffy and the Thousand Sunny. 8 12 21 22
- Straw Hat crew — Luffy’s separated companions. His desire to protect and reunite with them drives his decision to train before returning to Sabaody. 7 8
