The old yellow school bus rattled along the bumpy dirt road for nearly two hours before finally stopping in front of a faded wooden sign—"Welcome to Crystal Lake Camp."
Sunlight filtered through the towering pines, casting mottled shadows across the ground. The air carried the mingled scent of pine needles and damp earth. The camp looked little different from old photographs taken decades ago: rows of crude cabins, a broad lake, and a wooden pier that looked ready to collapse at any moment.
"Whoa, this place looks... very vintage," one student remarked dramatically as he dragged his suitcase along.
"Vintage? It's practically an antique," another girl complained. "Is there any signal here? Oh my God, not even one bar!"
The kids poured off the bus, chattering excitedly as they rushed toward their cabins, eager to begin a week of revelry. Edward and Carrie followed behind the crowd. He carried his backpack with the easygoing air of someone on a picnic rather than entering a haunted house.
"You don't look disappointed at all," Carrie said softly.
"Disappointed about what? These rundown cabins, this isolated setting, this bunch of hormone-crazed young people..." Edward looked around and nodded in satisfaction. "This is a textbook-perfect horror movie opening. Every element is here. All that's missing is the protagonist."
That night, a huge bonfire blazed at the center of camp. Guitar music, singing, and the laughter of young people mingled together, driving back the darkness among the trees. Most of the students gathered around the fire, playing games or secretly trading flirtatious glances.
Edward had no interest in that kind of party. He nudged Carrie beside him with his elbow. "Come on. Let's do something useful."
The two quietly slipped away from the lively crowd and into the nearby woods. Moonlight was shattered by the dense canopy overhead, and the only sounds around them were insects chirping and the rustle of fallen leaves beneath their feet.
"Where... are we going?" Carrie followed behind him nervously.
"Looking for the local celebrity." Edward pulled a powerful flashlight from his backpack, its beam sweeping through the dark woods. "Usually, he likes living in a rundown shack by the lake, or he just lives at the bottom of it. We'll start along the shore."
They circled the lake but found nothing except a few abandoned tool sheds that were nearly falling apart. Under the moonlight, the lake gleamed darkly, like the eye of some silent beast.
"Maybe... it's all just a legend?" Carrie asked tentatively.
"Impossible." Edward looked utterly certain. "A summer camp without a killer is like fries without ketchup. It has no soul."
The next two days passed without incident.
The students rowed boats, swam, and practiced archery, completely immersed in the fun of summer camp. Aside from having a few more mosquitoes, the legendary Blood Camp seemed no different from any ordinary vacation camp.
Edward had not found so much as a single hair from Jason, and he could not help feeling a little disappointed.
On the third afternoon, he simply found a fishing rod and sat on the rickety pier to fish. Carrie sat quietly nearby, watching him occasionally lift the rod, then lower it again in disappointment.
"What are you fishing for?" Carrie asked curiously.
"Jason," Edward answered with a straight face. "Think about it. He's lived at the bottom of the lake for years. Maybe he evolved gills. If he gets hungry and wants a change of flavor, what if he bites my bait?"
Carrie laughed at him, her eyes curving like a crescent moon.
While Crystal Lake Camp was peaceful and serene, another "party" a hundred miles away at the Connor Household was reaching its climax.
The music in the living room was deafening, with beer bottles and snack bags scattered across the floor. The nanny, Bi, had invited several friends over to Edward's house to "hang out."
There was Max, a hulking man with knotted muscles and tattoos covering his neck. Alison, a hot blonde in a crop top. Sonia, a cool-looking Asian girl with smoky eye makeup. And there was also a thin-looking man in black-rimmed glasses, a friend Sonia had brought along.
Lily sat on the stairs leading to the second floor, hugging her teddy bear. Her little legs swung back and forth as she watched these adults, like an outsider, play a childish game—truth or dare.

The bottle spun around several times on the floor before its mouth pointed at Bi.
"Truth or dare?" Max grinned, showing a mouthful of white teeth.
"Dare." Bi lounged lazily against the sofa, her eyes unfocused like a satisfied cat.
"Fine." Alison gave a wicked smile and made a provocative demand. "Kiss everyone here. Mouth to mouth."
Excited whistles erupted throughout the living room.
Bi smiled. She rose to her feet and swayed over to Max. Cradling his face, she planted a wet kiss on him. Then came Alison, then Sonia. Her movements were bold and seductive, pushing the atmosphere to its peak.
Finally, she walked up to the man with glasses. He was clearly flattered, his face flushing red as he nervously adjusted his glasses.
"Your turn." Bi's voice was sickeningly sweet as she slowly bent down.
At that moment, a deathly pale bolt of lightning streaked across the distant sky.
Dark clouds filled the sky above Crystal Lake, and fierce winds howled. Without warning, a thunderbolt struck down, hitting the depths of the lake's center dead on. The still water exploded in a massive splash, and an electric current surged along the water toward a rotting corpse chained at the bottom of the lake. One of the corpse's fingers suddenly twitched.
In the Connor Household's living room.
Under the glasses man's eager yet shy gaze, Bi still wore a sweet smile, but her eyes instantly turned cold and hollow. With lightning speed, she pulled two sharp ice picks from behind her back and, without hesitation, drove them into both of the man's temples.
"Squelch—"
The faint sound of blades piercing flesh was almost inaudible, perfectly drowned out by the rolling thunder outside.
The man's body stiffened. His glasses slipped off, and his eyes still held the last traces of shock and disbelief. Blood gushed down the handles of the ice picks.
The smiles vanished from Max, Alison, and Sonia's faces, replaced by expressions of fervent solemnity. They did not scream or panic, as though the bloody scene before them was merely a ritual they had rehearsed long ago.
"Unclean blood has been offered." Bi released her grip, allowing the corpse to slump limply onto the carpet as blood quickly spread into a dark red stain. She wiped a speck of blood from her cheek with the elegance of someone polishing a work of art.
She turned and looked toward the stairs.
Max and the other two looked over as well.
Their gazes crossed the wrecked living room and settled precisely on the little girl clutching a teddy bear.
Lily remained seated there, completely still. She did not cry or look afraid. She merely tilted her head, her innocent eyes reflecting the steadily cooling corpse on the carpet and the blood-soaked woman beside it.
"Now it's your turn." Bi's voice was no longer sweet. It had become hoarse and eerie, filled with religious fervor. "My dear little Lily, we need your... pure blood."
She reached a hand toward Lily, a twisted smile spreading across her face. "For our great master, Lady Dorothy, the Death Witch of the Underworld, needs your soul as a sacrifice. Mix the sacrificial blood with your pure blood, and she will grant us eternal life!"
The breathing of the three fanatics in the living room grew heavy, their eyes filled with longing for their deity and greed for the sacrifice before them.
On the stairs, Lily looked at them. Then, suddenly, she smiled.
It was an angelic, sweet, innocent smile. In her childish voice, she spoke, her words carrying clearly to everyone during a break in the thunder:
"Okay, then... come and take it."
