Background

Alan is Maria’s twin sister. She initially awakens in Maria’s body while Maria’s soul is trapped in a mirror; Alan relishes the chance to live boldly in the life Maria had been too frightened to claim 18. She confronts Maria’s father over her clothing, overpowers Maria’s former bully Mark, and publicly asks Edward Connor on a date 18.

Later, Alan explains that Maria herself had wanted to withdraw into the mirror and asked Alan to live in her place, fight back, and do what Maria could not 22. The sisters remain deeply connected despite their sharply different temperaments and frequent conflicts over Alan’s actions.
