After receiving Xie Chen's "true teachings," the other villains had done fairly well. They all finished turning over their plots within the allotted time.
The village chief took a glance and decided the quality barely passed, then turned toward the other two brothers with a worried look.
Honestly, even bringing in an old ox would have been faster than those two.
It really wasn't easy for them to dawdle and fuss around to this extent.
The village chief hesitated, wondering whether he should talk to the staff and plead for them. If they truly weren't suited for farmwork, they might as well be sent back.
Just as he thought that, a villager suddenly ran over, panic written all over his face.
"Village Chief, hurry and take a look! Biaozi from next door is here again!"
At those words, the honest and kind village chief immediately changed expression. "Again?! What's he trying to do now?!"
Before he had even finished speaking, he took off running.
The others had no idea what was happening and looked bewildered. Only Xie Chen stood up from the dirt pit and said to his cameraman, "Come on, let's find some material."
The cameraman replied, "????"
Before he could process it, he said, "Wouldn't that be inappropriate? We're filming the field task right now."
"Those two idiots don't know when they'll finish. At their snail's pace, it'll probably be late by the time they're done. Do you think the fans will want to watch that? They'll get impatient soon enough."
Xie Chen glanced in the direction the village chief had gone, his face utterly serious.
"If the livestream loses traffic because of this and can't make it onto tonight's trending searches, do you think Director Li will be happy?"
Of course he wouldn't be happy!
Director Li, sitting before the monitors, gave his answer through the walkie-talkie. "Follow them!"
So Xie Chen took his cameraman and went after the village chief.
The other guests followed suit, chasing after them alongside their assigned cameramen.
In the blink of an eye, only the two Xie brothers and a dim camera light remained in the task field.
Xie Ran frowned, his expression dark.
Xie Chen was definitely doing it on purpose. He would stop at nothing just to steal their traffic!
Did he think that would make him famous overnight?! How ridiculous! Without the Xie Family's resources, he would be forced out of the industry sooner or later!
Unlike Xie Ran's resentment, Xie Jinran felt a faint trace of disappointment as he watched the departing crowd.
His adopted younger brother, who had once clung to his side every moment of the day, had actually left?!
Hadn't he seen that his formal suit was already filthy beyond recognition?
Or that more than half of the task field still hadn't been turned over?!
Was Xie Chen really that heartless?!
Had everything he did before been an act?!
Seeing the two of them standing there without moving again, the cameraman secretly lamented that he must have had terrible luck in eight lifetimes to be assigned to film guest stars.
These two were the real oddballs, okay?!
"Hurry up. At this pace, you might not even finish by tomorrow morning," he couldn't help saying.
Xie Ran seized the chance and habitually played the victim. "Sorry, I've dragged you down again. Why don't you leave too? Third Brother and I can stay here. Just set the camera over there."
He pointed at the mound of dirt and said pitifully, "We can film ourselves."
The cameraman had seen far too many fake innocent types. He rolled his eyes. "Cut the useless nonsense and get to work."
Xie Jinran immediately took offense. "What kind of attitude is that?! Believe it or not, I can get you fired on the spot! I'll make sure you can't survive in this industry!"
"Oh, Young Master Xie is threatening me? I'm so scared, so scared. My apologies to you two, elite tycoons of high society. A lowly commoner like me can't afford to offend you!" After mocking himself, the cameraman said nothing more.
After calming down, Xie Jinran somewhat regretted his impulsiveness.
Even though he had never worked in the entertainment industry, he understood how important a personal cameraman was.
Once you offended one, they could make you look as ugly as they pleased.
The viewers didn't know the truth. All they saw were one-sided edits, and the impact on a celebrity was obvious.
Xie Ran had clearly thought of that as well and opened his mouth to smooth things over. "Third Brother, cameramen have it hard too. We should be more understanding."
Xie Jinran nodded slightly. "You're right. I shouldn't have lost my temper."
He tried to ease the awkward atmosphere, glancing at the cameraman from the corner of his eye, only to find that the man simply didn't care and acted as if he had heard nothing...
It seemed the grudge had definitely been formed!
The village chief ran faster and faster. He had no idea the guests were following behind him. He ran after the villager all the way to the village entrance and spotted several young, sturdy men in the distance, straws hanging from their mouths as they lounged about.
"Biaozi!" He stopped and shouted. "There's a production crew filming in the village. Don't cause trouble!"
The fat-faced young man standing at the front was Biaozi. Hearing the shout, he spat out the straw in his mouth. "Who says I'm here to cause trouble?! I'm here to collect a debt!"
"No one owes you anything. Go back now!" The village chief waved his hand forcefully.
But one of Biaozi's lackeys behind him raised a hoe. "If you don't give us an explanation today, we ain't leaving! You took our village's land, sold the crops, and won't even share the money?! How can Bright Village dream so damn beautifully?!"
Xie Chen arrived just in time to hear that, and memories of the variety show he had watched before his death quickly surfaced in his mind.
Murders were especially likely to happen in rural areas, and the methods tended to be brutal. The main conflicts usually centered around disputes over land boundaries.
This place was no exception.
The filming location, Bright Village, and neighboring Dragon Township Village had experienced conflicts large and small over farmland issues for years. Even the town government had specially come to mediate, yet nothing had been resolved. Once, things had nearly escalated into a death.
The Biaozi before them was the ringleader. Young and unemployed, he disliked working in the fields and came around to stir up trouble from time to time.
Especially after seeing a production crew come to Bright Village to film a variety show, he had become wildly jealous and started causing increasingly serious trouble. Eventually, in an accident, he knocked the village chief to the ground. The latter fell unconscious on the spot and was ultimately rushed to the hospital, where resuscitation efforts failed...
Xie Chen had been furious when he watched the livestream back then. He had even thought that if he ever got the chance, he would teach those hoodlums a lesson and save the village chief's life while he was at it.
Then, in the blink of an eye, the opportunity had truly arrived.
The village chief's chest hurt from anger at those scoundrels, but he couldn't intensify the conflict. He could only try to reason with them again. Just as he was about to speak, he realized someone had stepped in front of him.
"Come on, come on, come on." Xie Chen crooked a finger at Biaozi. "Whatever you've got, bring it to me. What kind of skill is it to bully a bunch of old, weak, sick, and disabled people?!"
Biaozi froze, then quickly revealed a vicious expression. "Who the fuck are you?!"
Xie Chen curved his lips in a smile. "I'm your dad!"
