Background

Wan Kuo was one of the remaining inhabitants of Seven Valleys Town during the town’s strange, deadly calamity. Frail and trapped among dwindling survivors, he initially had no means to protect himself against the unseen horror consuming the town. 49

While searching the abandoned Wang Family estate, he discovered the introductory Li Huo Art, an unknown black pill, and a sealed chest. The chest contained twenty silver ingots and a Spirit Crystal; with the crystal’s aid, he became the first person in the Wang Family’s known history to successfully draw qi using the stored manual. 49 50

His early cultivation was self-taught and dangerous. After completing one Lesser Celestial Circuit, he still lacked the spiritual power needed for even basic fire arts. 51 Fearing that he lacked time to grow strong enough to survive the town’s crisis, he swallowed the unknown pill. It was the Blood-Boiling Fire-Severing Pill, a resource compatible with the Li Huo Art that boiled his blood, strengthened his physique, and enabled him to control spirit fire after two days of agony. 53 54

After leaving Seven Valleys Town, Wan Kuo struggled as a resource-starved rogue cultivator. During this period, Li Guanhai’s remnant soul awakened within his Sea of Consciousness. The two were bound to prosper and suffer together, leading Li Guanhai to train Wan Kuo rather than attempt possession. 139

More than two years of instruction transformed Wan Kuo into a peak Qi Refining cultivator proficient in five-element arts. Seeking a path beyond the limits of rogue cultivation, he accepted Hunyuan Sect’s admission trial: steal a Five-Element Stone from Su Wanqing without exposing the sect. 139

Wan Kuo infiltrated the Myriad Treasures Pavilion by creating a fire diversion, concealing himself with water mist, and ambushing Su Wanqing with earth- and metal-element techniques. When Su Yunshan intervened, he escalated the theft into a violent escape, using Flame Dragon Break, poisoned golden needles, fireballs, and mist to secure the stone. 140 141

After delivering the Five-Element Stone, he officially joined Hunyuan Sect, but the sect offered no safe route out of Redwater Commandery City during the Su Household’s blockade. Following Li Guanhai’s advice, Wan Kuo hid in the western district as the disguised dockworker “Wang Er,” suppressing his spiritual power and assuming the mannerisms of his former impoverished life. 144 145

He escaped the city and reached the Western Mass Graveyard, where Hunyuan Sect cultivators attempted to receive him. Dong Lin—disguised as “Su Que”—attacked the group, forcing the Hunyuan cultivators to activate a Blood-Escape Talisman that carried Wan Kuo away with them. 146 147 The encounter left him deeply fearful of Dong Lin’s lightning aura; when he saw Dong Lin again much later, he immediately recognized “Su Que” despite Dong Lin’s changed appearance. 148 236
