The little old man let out a heavy breath, doing his best to calm himself before continuing:
"As opposing forces, we were destined from the moment of our birth to be irreconcilable, yet we also depended on each other."
Seeing Lu Xi's bewildered expression, the little old man patiently explained:
"To put it simply, whenever we met, we were bound to fight tooth and nail, but neither of us could actually kill the other!"
Lu Xi promptly asked:
"What would happen if one of you really killed the other?"
The little old man's expression turned solemn as he said gravely:
"The consequences would be unimaginable. The entire great universe would instantly collapse and return to its original state of chaos. We would perish along with it and become that vague, indistinct will once more."
Lu Xi swallowed involuntarily. The truth was simply too shocking for him to accept all at once.
Ever since he had vaguely sensed his connection to Lucifer, he had always thought he might be God's son.
He had never imagined that his "prototype" and God were beings on the same level.
The little old man continued:
"That is precisely why we each established our boundaries."
"In other words, the Heaven and Hell you know. We normally stayed out of each other's way and never met."
Lu Xi suddenly seemed to realize something and asked:
"Wait, that's not right. Isn't there no God in the Marvel Universe? How do you explain that?"
The little old man rolled his eyes and said irritably:
"I never said I was from this universe. I came from next door. By your understanding, it should be called the DC Universe."
Lu Xi knew very little about DC's background setting and did not understand the intricacies involved, so he could not help asking:
"Uh... wouldn't the one in charge here interfere? You just swaggered over like this?"
The little old man snorted and said with faint pride:
"I smuggled myself in. As long as I don't interfere with this universe's affairs, I won't be discovered."
Lu Xi nodded and asked cautiously:
"Then why did you go through all the trouble of bringing me to Marvel? What exactly do you want me to do?"
The little old man said with a serious expression:
"I'm tired. I want to retire, so I need to find a successor."
Lu Xi was filled with doubt. He did not believe such a good deal could fall from the sky, and he instinctively became wary.
"Something this good? Then why me?"
The little old man saw his caution and explained seriously:
"Because only another Lucifer can succeed me, Lucifer."
"There are deep-rooted rules restricting this. No one else can replace me."
Lu Xi's pupils contracted as he keenly caught the key word:
"Another? What does that mean?"
The little old man patiently explained:
"Among the countless multiverses, there are all kinds of Lucifer variants. Fundamentally speaking, we are all projections of the same person in different universes. And you are the most special one."
He paused, then emphasized, "When I traveled through dimensions, I discovered that only your world had neither Heaven nor Hell, and naturally no related authority or power. You are the purest Lucifer. Only you can inherit my position."
Lu Xi nodded. Although the explanation sounded absurd, he had no other way to verify it and could only choose to believe it for now.
But then he suddenly noticed a blind spot and asked in confusion:
"That doesn't seem right. Do beings as powerful as you get tired too? Even in my current state, I have endless energy."
The moment the little old man heard that, his resentment surged forth like floodwaters bursting through a dam, and he began complaining without end:
"I've existed for twenty billion years and never taken a single day off! Back on your Blue Star, no matter how exhausting or miserable a job was, they at least gave you vacation time, right? Have you ever seen work like mine?!"
Lu Xi almost laughed out loud. At that moment, he deeply empathized with the little old man's suffering.
This was the ultimate corporate slave. Even the most heartless boss would not dare exploit an employee so relentlessly.
Unfortunately, the little old man was working for himself. There was no boss above him to complain to. He was basically exploiting himself.
The little old man apparently had not vented enough and continued grumbling:
"Every day, not only do I have to suppress all kinds of unruly demon gods, I also have to watch you variants out there living carefree lives! Twenty billion years! Do you know how I spent those twenty billion years?!"
Lu Xi pressed his lips together, suppressing his laughter as he asked:
"Us? Carefree? Why don't I feel that way?"
The little old man glared at him irritably and said:
"Especially you! A variant who doesn't have to bear any authority, yet still inherited the position! I watched you keep reincarnating, and every life of yours went smoothly. The moment you thought of something, it just came to you!"
"When you wanted money, business opportunities would inexplicably fall right into your lap. When you wanted a wife, beautiful women would show up at your doorstep selling themselves to bury their fathers!"
"Do you know how that made me feel, watching you all this time?!"
Lu Xi blinked, secretly astonished. He had not expected his luck to have been that good.
The little old man looked at him and said solemnly:
"You've had your fun. Now it's time for you to shoulder Lucifer's responsibilities."
Lu Xi asked in surprise:
"Huh? Now?"
The little old man shook his head:
"Of course not now. With your current abilities, you cannot bear power that is too great."
Lu Xi hurriedly asked:
"Then what should I do?"
The little old man gave a mysterious smile:
"Time will tell you everything. I came to find you now because you're in trouble, kid."
As he spoke, he waved his hand, and a lifelike scene immediately appeared before them.
In the scene, six demon gods entered a Hell Dimension together with imposing momentum, radiating a chilling aura.
Under their coercion, a black-winged Lucifer was helplessly forced to serve as the vanguard in an attack on Earth.
The scene was so vivid that Lu Xi felt as though he were there in person.
He could even sense the faint Skyfather-level energy emanating from the six demon gods, as well as the aura on Black-Winged Lucifer that shared the same origin as his own.
Looking at the scene, Lu Xi could not help saying:
"Seven against one? Isn't that a little too dirty? Do they have any sense of fair play at all?"
The little old man snorted:
"If I hadn't secretly lent you a hand, kid, you could've just typed GG this time."
Lu Xi shook his head and said:
"Knowing about it alone won't help. Since you're doing a good deed, see it through. Why don't you just step in and help?"
The little old man rolled his eyes:
"Don't worry. That black-winged Lucifer is also me. When the time comes, I'll make my move."
"But remember this: after I act this time, I can only flee back to my own world. From then on, you'll have to rely on yourself for everything. It's time for me to go back and enjoy a peaceful retirement."
Lu Xi nodded repeatedly:
"No problem. We'll get through one hurdle at a time. We can talk about the future later."
The little old man waved his hand and said impatiently:
"You understand the situation now. Go back and prepare yourself. Get lost, and stop being an eyesore here!"
As he spoke, he waved his hand, and a portal appeared before Lu Xi.
Then he picked up his fishing rod again and stared intently at the water, preparing to continue fishing.
Lu Xi stood up helplessly:
"Uh... all right. Then I'm counting on you to carry this one."
Just then, the fishing rod in the little old man's hand suddenly jerked violently, and his face instantly lit up with delight.
But immediately afterward, the fish seemed to slip off the hook, and all movement vanished without a trace.
The little old man immediately let out a miserable roar:
"My fish!!!"
Lu Xi sensed that things were going badly. Afraid the little old man would vent his fury on him, he immediately sprinted into the portal without looking back.
