Central commercial district Shops selling illegal magical goods operated under the influence of Pure-blood families. Its customers and dark wizards were generally better off than residents of the outskirts 89 90.

Knockturn Alley was larger than Diagon Alley, but its property was far less valuable. The contrast between its slums and commercial center shaped Lester Bide’s plan to recruit exploited Muggle-born wizards 88 89 90 91.

History

Lester first visited Knockturn Alley while scouting opportunities for a business. He obtained the deed to the Pucey family’s shop at Number 46, a narrow three-story building near the boundary between the commercial district and the slums. An Undetectable Extension Charm gave its first floor roughly 200 square meters of space, though the building was initially filthy and run-down 87 89 90 91.

Azkaban prisoners cleaned and furnished the building, and Lester opened it as the Knockturn Alley Wizard Guild. He intended the guild to be a public base for workers trained at Azkaban and a starting point for organizing Muggle-born wizards. The Hunter Family subsequently tried to force him to sell the shop for one Galleon; after the family vanished, other prominent families avoided the guild 91 92 96.

The alley’s existing trade was disrupted by dangerous counterfeit potions. The Borgin and Thompson families suffered losses, while Lester’s impersonation of Quirrell led local families to blame the professor for the trade. The Thompson family eventually offered a bounty for Quirrell’s death 117 119 120.

Later, major dark-wizard families relocated to Spinner’s End, leaving Lester in control of Knockturn Alley. Under the Bide Group, the slums were replaced with mid-rise apartments, and the black market became a regulated wizard market watched by a prisoner-staffed enforcement team. Factory workers living nearby supported its shops and stalls, while the Bide Quidditch Stadium drew visitors. The district still lacked a hospital 275.
