Identity and Culture

Slytherin is portrayed as Hogwarts’ most openly hierarchical House. Its students generally respect strength, influence, and family standing; students perceived as powerful can attract followers, while blood status remains a decisive source of prejudice. Older students initially assess Lester as a possible ally because they believe he may be from an ancient Pure-blood family, but their acceptance is conditional on that assumption. 132

Although the House is strongly associated with Pure-blood aristocracy, it includes half-blood students and other students without elite family backgrounds. These students are routinely vulnerable to internal discrimination, such as Krim being ordered about by Pure-blood dormmates. 133 158

Social Events

Lester organizes a first-year Slytherin party in an abandoned classroom, assigning Jiedi to find a venue, Kitty to buy entertainment supplies, Malfoy to oversee decorations, and himself to obtain food. 171

The party strengthens first-year unity but results in a major disciplinary punishment when all eighteen first-years are found absent during a dormitory inspection. Slytherin loses 200 points, and the students receive a month of detention. 176

Lester is forcibly Sorted into Slytherin after a ten-minute Sorting in which an unknown cold voice announces the House name. The Slytherin table welcomes him as a presumed Pure-blood heir, unaware of his actual background. 131 132

After facing suspicion and mockery over his lack of aristocratic manners, Lester begins systematically winning over the House’s first-years. He uses intimidation, protection, magical ability, entertainment, and rhetoric to transform them into a united faction. 133 158 166 175

Challenge to Senior Authority

Slytherin’s older students repeatedly underestimate Lester because of his first-year status and perceived blood status. Marcus, Avery, and Tuoke try to exclude him from the Quidditch team, while Windsor and Thompson attempt to assert prefect authority over the younger students. 164 177 195 216

Lester responds through intimidation, leverage, humiliation, and recruitment, ultimately becoming recognized by the students as Slytherin’s “true kingpin.” 195 216

House Cup Campaign

Lester’s academic program, Quidditch victory, and coordination of House activities help push Slytherin into a large House-point lead. Slytherin reaches 2,000 points, standing ahead of Ravenclaw and Gryffindor, and prepares the Great Hall for what it expects to be its House Cup celebration. 252 256 257

Dumbledore then awards Gryffindor an additional 200 points for Neville’s recovery of the Philosopher’s Stone, putting Gryffindor one point ahead and changing the Great Hall’s decorations from Slytherin green to Gryffindor scarlet and gold. 258
