The lightning had already vanished, and darkness once again shrouded the surroundings.
The five red-robed figures with heads full of holes and slender iron whistles inserted into them still stood there. It was impossible to tell whether they were human or Ghost, and in this night that seemed to herald wind and rain, they looked utterly terrifying.
Having gone through the Red Tower Fairy and the treasure-chest bear, Duan Yun considered his nerves much tougher than before, yet tonight's sight still filled him with fear.
Fear of the unknown.
Because he could not determine whether these things were human at all.
This world really had "surprises" lurking everywhere.
Yes, no one knew when those five "Teletubbies" had arrived. If not for that dazzling flash of lightning, no one would likely have noticed five such people amid the wild grass.
It was as though they had always been there, unchanging since time immemorial, like those weather-beaten, neglected statues of gods they had passed on the road before.
With a boom, another bolt of lightning fell.
Chaos had already broken out among the caravan, because the red-robed figures who had been sitting in the grass had reached the roadside.
They moved!
Judging by their posture, they did not resemble humans at all, but lizard-like crawling creatures.
The lightning illuminated their rough faces and the pitch-black holes in their scalps, making everyone's skin crawl.
As those strange figures closed in, the caravan members had already retreated toward Duan Yun.
Yet a moment later, the caravan suddenly stopped moving, because the five strange figures crawled in another bizarre burst of movement, incredibly fast, and reached a position between Duan Yun and the caravan.
In other words, they had blocked the road.
By then, Duan Yun could not help growing tense, because the five were now closer to him.
The lame gray donkey backed away, as though it had seen a Ghost, looking utterly terrified.
Duan Yun stared fixedly at the five "Teletubbies." In the dim night, he could see only the outlines of their bodies, with "antennae" sticking out of their heads.
During this time, the five stopped moving again. They pointed the little iron whistles embedded in their heads toward the sky and muttered under their breaths.
Duan Yun even suspected they were casting a curse on him, so he quietly raised his Sword Finger, considering striking first to gain the upper hand.
Just then, a series of soft footsteps sounded beside him.
"Little brother, be careful. Don't provoke them. They're lunatics from the Thunder Duke and Old Mother Sect."
Duan Yun turned and saw two burly men.
At a glance, the pair were clearly twin brothers, identical in appearance. They wore beards and fitted martial outfits, giving off an air of trustworthiness.
Yes, upon seeing them, Duan Yun could not help thinking of those bold, heroic wanderers of the martial world.
Duan Yun asked in confusion, "Thunder Duke and Old Mother Sect?"
Thunder Duke and Old Mother—why did that sound so strange?
"Don't act rashly. They're listening to thunder. Once the thunder passes, they'll leave," said the man on the left as he drank.
Duan Yun had not expected that all those deep holes drilled into their heads, and the fine iron whistles inserted into those holes, were actually for listening to thunder.
Listening to thunder?
What kind of bizarre hobby was that?
With these two informed people present, Duan Yun was no longer quite so flustered.
The caravan people over there had evidently also noticed the two twin heroes and quietly edged closer.
These twin brothers were naturally Hua Wen and Hua Wu, the Great Medicine Planters.
They roamed the martial world with considerable heroic fame. Their burly, righteous-looking faces had always inspired trust, and that was also why they had been so successful at cultivating Great Medicine.
The two had followed the scent to harvest Duan Yun, this Great Medicine, but who could have expected them to run into people from the Thunder Duke and Old Mother Sect?
They did not want anything to happen to the Great Medicine, so they had "kindly" warned Duan Yun.
Rumble!
Another thunderclap struck. This time, because it was relatively close, Duan Yun could even see the iron whistles atop the Thunder Duke and Old Mother Sect members' heads vibrating.
The sight made his brain ache.
Suddenly, one man from the Thunder Duke and Old Mother Sect moved. With the iron whistle trembling atop his head, he cried madly, "I've attained Awakening!"
He was already skinny as skin stretched over bones. Now his eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a crazed, emaciated monkey, especially horrifying to behold.
Duan Yun could not help backing away two steps, wanting to shield everyone behind him. Yet the people around him retreated even faster, leaving him at the front anyway.
The "skinny monkey" wore a crazed expression and abruptly turned his bloodshot eyes toward them.
At once, everyone's scalp went numb.
"I've attained Awakening!"
"I've attained Awakening!"
"Hahahaha! I'll use you lot to test my technique!"
As he spoke, he dropped onto all fours and darted over like a lizard.
The scene struck with tremendous force, like an evil Ghost lunging into one's face in a horror film.
At the instant he closed in on Duan Yun and the others, lightning burst from the "skinny monkey's" hand and formed into the shape of a whip.
The skinny monkey laughed wildly and was about to lash Duan Yun with his whip!
Yet in the next instant, his body trembled, and the Thunder Whip in his hand went limp, failing to strike.
Because a snow-white sword light had pierced through his skull.
Duan Yun held his Sword Finger, his face taut with tension.
A trace of surprise appeared on the "skinny monkey's" face. Then he raised his right hand again, preparing to crack the whip once more.
With a swish, another sword light pierced through his glabella, making his body shudder again.
He still wanted to move, but two more pale sword lights shot toward him.
In the blink of an eye, four bloody holes had been punched through the "skinny monkey's" head, a gruesome sight to behold.
Yet what made sweat bead on Duan Yun's forehead was that this fellow still would not die. He was even struggling to come lash him.
With a swish, Duan Yun unleashed Sword Finger once again.
This time, the sword light passed straight through the man's chest.
Only then did the "skinny monkey's" body finally begin to sway and totter.
With shock and indignation on his face, he cursed, "Fuck!" Then he hit the ground with a thud.
Dead.
The "skinny monkey" had listened to the immortal thunder sounds of Thunder Duke and Old Mother for nearly ten years. Tonight, he had finally attained Awakening and comprehended a miraculous Thunder Whip technique.
Overjoyed, he had merely wanted to whip a few people to death to test his whip technique and have a little fun.
But that whip, until the moment he died, had never been cracked.
That felt even worse than death!
So he died.
His eyes remained open in death!
The surroundings suddenly fell quiet again, leaving only the rumbling thunder.
The change had come too quickly and too abruptly. Not only the caravan members—even Hua Wen and Hua Wu, the two Medicine Planters, were frightened.
Why was this Great Medicine's Sword Finger so fierce?
Fiercer than theirs!
Duan Yun then looked over and asked, "I didn't do anything. Why did this man suddenly turn violent?"
Hua Wu swallowed and explained, "When this bunch gets carried away listening to thunder, they go mad and commit murder. Otherwise, they wouldn't be called Thunder Crazies."
"Is that so?"
Just then, two of the Thunder Crazies who had been sitting on the ground listening to thunder suddenly stood up.
Without another word, Duan Yun raised his fingers and fired four Sword Fingers at the four Thunder Crazies.
Four sword lights accurately pierced through the hearts of the four Thunder Crazies from the Thunder Duke and Old Mother Sect. Their bodies arched backward, and they fell dead to the ground.
Duan Yun looked at the five fresh corpses and let out a long breath.
Good. Now he would not have to worry about them suddenly going mad.
That really scared the hell out of me just now!
Seeing this, Medicine Planters Hua Wen and Hua Wu could not help having their hairs stand on end and their temples pound.
Was their Great Medicine a little too extreme?
