Background
Hashirama founded Konohagakure and was remembered as the shinobi who distributed the Tailed Beasts among the Five Great Ninja Villages. Historical accounts state that he died shortly after his final battle with Madara Uchiha at the Valley of the End. 65 109
His absence becomes suspicious during Konoha's war with Kumogakure: Danzo and Orochimaru repeatedly fail to summon him with Impure World Reincarnation, while Tobirama confirms that Hashirama's soul is not in the Pure Land. 102 106
Hashirama later returns through Ning Qi's improved Impure World Reincarnation. Ning Qi has summoned him multiple times and can seize control of his body if he leaves Sword Hidden Village, making Hashirama's continued freedom conditional on cooperation. 113
Despite his restrictions, Hashirama accepts a position teaching Sword Hidden Village's students. He is relieved when he learns Konoha survived Kumogakure's invasion and remains burdened by guilt over what his village became after his death. 113
Identity and Impersonation
For much of the Fourth Shinobi World War, “Hashirama Senju” is also a public identity used by Ning Qi.
- Ning Qi first claims the name while masked in the Land of Waves, using Wood Release and declaring his intention to “plant trees of peace across the entire world.” 58
- Under the name, Ning Qi establishes Sword Hidden Village, recruits Zabuza and Haku, and founds the organization initially named Radiance, later referred to as the Sunlit Organization. 64 125
- The persona's apparent survival, Wood Release, and historical name persuade many observers—including Zabuza, Mei Terumi, Obito, and Kirigakure's leadership—that the original God of Shinobi has returned. 65 89 109
- After the genuine Hashirama is reanimated, Ning Qi explicitly tells him that the identity “Hashirama Senju already has an owner,” requiring him to teach under another name. 113
- Ning Qi ultimately makes the false identity permanent, operating openly as a masked “Hashirama Senju” while his replica Kūmei acts inside Akatsuki. 117 120
Personality
Original Hashirama
Hashirama is warm, self-effacing, and enthusiastic about educating younger generations. He readily accepts the academy post, worries that he may be outdated, and takes pride in having raised Tobirama. 113
He retains a strong attachment to Konoha even after death. Rather than solely blaming later Hokage for its decline, he considers whether flaws in the ideals he established contributed to its collapse. 113
Hashirama is also uneasy with Ning Qi's methods. He questions whether Kirigakure's reform must involve so many deaths and argues that openness and progress might emerge without such drastic coercion. 121
Public “Hashirama” Persona
Ning Qi's persona is far colder and more utilitarian. It presents itself as a righteous reformer while using war, engineered crises, Tailed Beast rampages, and political subversion to reshape the Land of Waves and Kirigakure. 71 126 128
Abilities & Skills
Wood Release
Hashirama's Wood Release is powerful enough to dominate battlefields and restrain Tailed Beasts.
- Deep Forest Emergence — Counters the Three-Tails' massive flood after Yagura transforms completely. 101 102
- Wood Dragon Jutsu — Binds and subdues the transformed Three-Tails. 102
- True Several Thousand Hands: Top Transformed Buddha — Summons a colossal thousand-armed statue to attack Ning Qi, forcing him to retreat with Flying Thunder God. 109
- His Wood Release can detect and restrict Zetsu's infiltration techniques, preventing easy surveillance through vegetation. 109 114
Tailed Beast Suppression
Hashirama overpowers Karatachi Yagura while the Mizukage is in complete Three-Tails transformation. This intervention establishes him as a direct threat to both Kirigakure and Akatsuki. 102 109
Impure World Reincarnation State
Hashirama's reanimated body retains much of his living strength due to Ning Qi's enhanced Impure World Reincarnation. 113
- He is restricted to Sword Hidden Village unless Ning Qi permits otherwise. 113
- Crossing the village boundary allows Ning Qi to take control of his body. 113
- Ning Qi uses Tsunade's safety and Hashirama's desire to remain useful as leverage. 113
Relationships
- Ning Qi — Summoner, captor, and controller of Hashirama's reanimated body; Ning Qi also appropriates Hashirama's name and reputation for his own reform campaign. 113 117
- Tobirama Senju — Younger brother. Tobirama's search for Hashirama after his own reanimation confirms that Hashirama's soul was absent from the Pure Land. 106
- Tsunade — Granddaughter. Hashirama demands to know her whereabouts after returning, while Ning Qi assures him she is alive but uses access to her as leverage. 109 113
- Zabuza Momochi and Haku — Recruited by Ning Qi's “Hashirama” persona into the Sunlit Organization; they initially accept the name and legend as genuine. 64 65 126
- Mei Terumi — Captured by the public “Hashirama” persona after the Land of Waves battle and later positioned as a key figure in Kirigakure's reform. 89 123
- Obito and Zetsu — Mistake the masked Wood Release user for the genuine Hashirama and become wary of confronting him directly. 102 109
Story Role
Return and the Three-Tails Incident
Hashirama intervenes when Yagura's complete Three-Tails transformation threatens Kirigakure. He blocks the resulting flood, restrains the Tailed Beast, and later clashes briefly with Ning Qi over Tsunade. 102 109
Sword Hidden Village Instructor
After being reanimated by Ning Qi, Hashirama begins teaching cultural classes at Sword Hidden Village's Ninja Academy. He argues that strength alone does not make someone a good teacher and prioritizes the students' development over combat training. 113 120
Legacy in the Reform Campaign
Although Ning Qi's impersonation drives the Sunlit Organization's campaigns in the Land of Waves and Kirigakure, the real Hashirama's name gives those actions immense legitimacy. His reputation draws ninja to Sword Hidden Village and convinces others that a world-changing reform movement may be possible. 65 120
