| Natural-energy sensing | 164 | After beginning Mount Myoboku training, Jiraiya can sense a small amount of natural energy but struggles with static meditation and chakra control. |
| Sage Chakra Charging Mode | 166 167 | Neji implants a Natural Energy Filter around a spinal bone. Jiraiya first overloads the system, but its safety mechanism expels the excess energy; he subsequently achieves a temporary Sage state lasting roughly four to five minutes. |
| Revised Mount Myoboku Sage Art / Transcendent Shadow Rank | 249 | Using Neji's revised Sage Art: Twin Life Technique—Revised, he enters Sage Mode in three breaths without Fukasaku and Shima's assistance. The breakthrough stabilizes his Sage Art and elevates him to Transcendent Shadow Rank. |
Background
Jiraiya was a socially isolated student in Konoha's elite Second Year Class A. Though he had entered through connections, clan children repeatedly excluded him from their groups; he resented the advantages of those born into powerful families. Neji's arrival changed this situation: after seeing Neji's artwork, Jiraiya immediately declared them friends, and the two became close. 123
As a child, Jiraiya was already loud, hot-blooded, and determined to become Hokage. He also drew crude erotic comics, an early form of the writing and “research” habits he retained later in life. 123 125
Neji supplied Jiraiya with experimental talismans in exchange for discretion and attentiveness in class. Jiraiya used a Flash Talisman to defeat Inuzuka Kobayashi during the graduation assessment, allowing him to graduate around the middle of his class. 125 128
Following graduation, Jiraiya spoke more seriously about becoming strong enough to protect others, revealing that his parents had died in the previous war. 129
Appearance
Jiraiya is a white-haired shinobi whose appearance becomes increasingly recognizable as he grows older, particularly through his flamboyant spiky hair and red markings extending from the corners of his eyes. 123 128
- White hair, often described as wild or spiky. 123 128
- Red eye-shadow-like markings were already visible by his graduation examination. 128
- In his academy years, he was notably disheveled, once appearing with breakfast sauce on his collar and a snot bubble on his nose. 123 124
- His Sage Mode manifests orange facial markings and orange Sage Chakra. 167
Personality
Jiraiya is exuberant, impulsive, and intensely competitive. He boasts about becoming Hokage, eagerly challenges stronger opponents, and tends to rush into unfamiliar techniques before considering the risks. His first attempt at using the Natural Energy Filter nearly turns him into a stone toad because he absorbs natural energy too aggressively. 123 166
His lecherous humor is apparent from childhood. He proudly shares erotic comics, reacts dramatically to Neji's Illusion Talisman, and later proposes putting a Spirit Board relay station on a women's bathhouse. 123 125 172
Beneath the immaturity, Jiraiya is protective and loyal. During the three-way Sage Art melee, he interrupts Orochimaru's ambush on Tsunade despite being her opponent. His grief also destabilizes his Sage Mode when Impure World Reincarnation forces him to fight a former comrade. 168 225
Jiraiya is capable of humility when faced with a genuine gap in power. After watching younger shinobi advance, he accepts Neji's revised Sage Art teachings and silently bows toward Neji's office before beginning secluded training. 249
Abilities & Skills
Mount Myoboku Sage Art
Jiraiya's Sage Art specializes in adaptable, nature-attuned orange Sage Chakra. His original training method was poorly suited to his tendency toward movement and direct combat, but Neji's filter and later revised technique allow him to establish a more stable balance. 164 167 249
- Sage Chakra Charging Mode — An entry-level Sage state enabled by Neji's Natural Energy Filter; increases his speed, power, and ninjutsu but lasts only four to five minutes. 167
- Sage Art: Twin Life Technique—Revised — Enters Sage Mode within three breaths and creates two hazy Sage Chakra bodies over his shoulders, replacing his former reliance on Fukasaku and Shima. 249
- Sage Art: Toad Oil Flame Bullet — Fires natural-energy-infused oil and flame capable of burning through Lightning Release Armor. 168 195
- Sage Art: Fire Release: Goemon — Produces pure Sage Art flames without toad oil; its heat melts and blackens the terrain. 249
- Sage Art: Wild Lion's Mane Technique — Extends Sage Chakra-infused hair as high-speed binding and striking cords. 168
- Sage Art: Five Right Gate — A massive flame storm used with the Rock-Dwelling Toad Esophagus during the assault on Neji. 169
- Limitations — The original filter-assisted state causes fatigue and filter backlash when depleted; the filter also requires periodic replacement after repeated use. 167 169
Summoning and Toad Techniques
Jiraiya employs Mount Myoboku-related summons and terrain-control techniques in battle.
- Summoning Technique: Rock-Dwelling Toad Esophagus — Summons the binding esophageal walls of the Great Rock-Dwelling Toad to restrict an opponent's movement. 169
- Fights atop Gamabunta during the Land of Rain battle. 225
- Sage Art: Earth Release: Earth-Style Rampart — Raises an earthen barrier to intercept Orochimaru's attack on Tsunade. 168
Talisman-Assisted Tactics
Before mastering Sage Art, Jiraiya makes practical use of Neji's Ninja Talisman Hall products.
- Uses a Flash Talisman to blind Inuzuka Kobayashi and create an opening for a taijutsu victory. 128
- Orders improved Substitute Talismans and Combination Talismans containing flash, smoke, and Earth Release effects. 129
- Keeps Neji's Illusion Talisman secret after its activation causes him a severe nosebleed. 125
Equipment / Items
- Natural Energy Filter — A rune-inscribed Mystic Crystal vertebral implant designed by Neji; converts absorbed natural energy and ejects excess energy when Jiraiya loses control. 165 166
- Ninja Talisman Hall talismans — Including Flash Talismans, Substitute Talismans, and Combination Talismans. 128 129
- Revised Mount Myoboku Sage Art scroll — Neji's corrected and improved Sage Art system, delivered to Jiraiya through Tsunade. 249
Relationships
- Neji Hyuga — Closest academy friend and later mentor in Sage Art. Neji supplies him with talismans, implants his Natural Energy Filter, and develops the revised Mount Myoboku Sage Art that resolves his long-standing bottleneck. 123 164 249
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and constant rival. She scolds his recklessness, protects his pride with harsh encouragement, and spars with him after his Sage Art breakthrough. 125 166 249
- Orochimaru — Fellow Sannin and intellectual opposite. Their exchanges are often hostile or mocking, but they fight alongside one another and pursue Sage Art through different paths. 148 168
- Fukasaku and Shima — Mount Myoboku sages who originally assisted Jiraiya's Sage Mode; Neji's revised technique allows Jiraiya to enter Sage Mode without their direct assistance. 145 249
- Gamabunta — Toad summon whose head Jiraiya uses as a fighting position during the Land of Rain battle. 225

Natural Energy Filter Trials
Jiraiya is the first volunteer for Neji's spinal-filter procedure. He initially mishandles natural energy, but the implant saves him and enables his first Sage Chakra Charging Mode. In the Land of Rain, he battles White Zetsu and reincarnated former comrades. The emotional burden of fighting familiar faces and the battle's extreme attrition destabilize his Sage Mode. 225
Completed Sage Art
After seeing Konoha's younger generation surpass old limits, Jiraiya confronts his own stagnation. Tsunade gives him Neji's revised Sage Art scroll, and he completes the Twin Life Technique—Revised through secluded training.
