Background / History

Kaecilius was once a disciple of the Ancient One at Kamar-Taj and was regarded as a sorcerous genius with unusually rapid mastery of spells. After learning the Ancient One's techniques and defeating Wong, he became convinced that he had outgrown his teacher, whom he considered excessively pacifist and weak. 2 13

After leaving Kamar-Taj, Kaecilius pursued revenge against the Ancient One and sought forbidden dark magic. He defeated a demon of the Dark Dimension, but the encounter eroded his soul and exposed him to the Dark Dimension's power. Dormammu subsequently tempted him with claims that the Ancient One's strength and the Time Stone were tied to dark power. 13

He came to believe that acquiring the library's hidden dark arts and the Time Stone would let him surpass the Ancient One, rule the Dark Dimension, and establish a new order. 1 11 13

Betrayal and First Clash

Kaecilius ambushes the Ancient One with his dark dagger and declares that her era is over. When Lin Du demonstrates instant spell mastery, Kaecilius attempts to recruit him into a shared campaign to overturn the existing magical order. 1 2

Lin Du pretends to accept the offer long enough to touch Kaecilius and absorb his Dark Blade and shadow-energy control. Lin Du then openly rejects him, prompting Kaecilius to retreat rather than face Lin Du and the Ancient One together. 3

Raid on the Sorcerers' Library

Kaecilius returns with followers to raid the Sorcerers' Library for hidden dark magic and the Time Stone. Lin Du blocks the group with the Rings of Raggadorr, absorbs their Dark Blades, and counterattacks with enhanced, tracking dark blades. 11

As the battle worsens, Kaecilius unleashes a Flame Storm, summons dark phantoms, and reanimates fallen subordinates as ghouls. Lin Du reflects Kaecilius's attacks back upon him, badly injuring him and destroying his forces. 12 13

Apparent Death and Return

During the battle for the Sanctum, Lin Du teleports behind Kaecilius and floods his body with dark energy until Kaecilius dissipates into black smoke. 14

Kaecilius later reappears in the void, concludes that he cannot defeat Lin Du alone, and summons Dormammu despite his terror of the punishment awaiting a failed servant. 16

Dormammu's Ritual and Final Defeat

Under Dormammu's command, Kaecilius accelerates Operation Shadow Devouring and leads his followers in rituals to force Dormammu's descent. Lin Du reverses the Hong Kong Sanctum ritual with the Time Stone, but Dormammu still forces his way toward Earth. 19 23 24

Following Dormammu's defeat and absorption by Lin Du, Kaecilius and his remaining followers lose the will to resist. Lin Du captures them and sends them to the Dark Dimension to face the consequences of their actions. 27
