Background / History
Wong is one of Kamar-Taj's few recognized Masters and bears responsibility for guarding the sanctuary. Before taking charge of the library keys, he spends much of his time studying old documents and only leaves to teach when necessary. His stern appearance conceals a gentle disposition. 4
He rose through Kamar-Taj from apprenticeship and became a battle mage through real combat. His experience includes fighting threats emerging from dimensional rifts, and he treats combat training as preparation for inevitable life-or-death encounters. 5 10 15
Wong and Hamir trained in the same generation and retained a quiet, long-standing friendship despite following different paths: Wong as a practical combatant and guardian, Hamir as a scholar of magical theory. 16
After Kamidar reports Zhao Yu's unprecedented three-day mastery of the Magic Shield, Wong secretly observes the apprentice through the Mirror Dimension. Recognizing both Zhao Yu's talent and the danger of mishandling it, he orders that the apprentice receive accelerated guidance and access to more advanced instruction. 4 5
When Kamidar can no longer effectively teach Zhao Yu, Wong becomes his direct mentor. He tests Zhao Yu in the Mirror Dimension, begins training him in Kamar-Taj combat arts and magical artifacts, then guides him through advanced spells including the Ring of Raggadorr, Chaos Orb, and Mirror Dimension. 9 10 14 18 20
Wong and Hamir become concerned when Kaecilius begins instructing Zhao Yu. They wait outside Kaecilius's quarters and are relieved when Zhao Yu explicitly rejects Kaecilius's path. 26 Following Kaecilius's betrayal and Zhao Yu's escalating magical sensitivity, Wong supports transferring Zhao Yu's lessons to Mordo rather than allowing his own limits to impede the apprentice. 29 31
During the Chitauri invasion of New York, Wong coordinates Kamar-Taj's forces in the Mirror Dimension, manages rotations and reserves, and directs Hamir to deploy a large-scale resonance spell. After witnessing Zhao Yu's impact on the battle, Wong calls him Kamar-Taj's “turning point.” 35 41
