The Slytherin first-years arrived at the Great Hall together with the head of Gryffindor, causing an uproar among the young wizards of both houses. After all, the two houses had never gotten along particularly well.
Xiwen, however, did not care much about it. He had no time to worry about such trivial matters. He had barely eaten breakfast, and with all the mental and physical activity that morning, he was starving.
He dropped into a seat behind the Slytherin table and found that his timing was not bad. It apparently was not yet the end of the meal, and dishes were still appearing on the plates without pause.
Perhaps because they had not eaten breakfast, Abu and the other two were still stuffing themselves when Xiwen sat down.
They watched Xiwen enter the Great Hall with Dumbledore and nearly dropped their cutlery in shock!
"Xiwen!" Abu hurried over with a glass of juice in hand and asked in disbelief, "How did you dare get so close to Dumbledore?!"
Mobley quickly followed. "So is Dumbledore really an unpredictable dark wizard?"
"I don't know..." Xiwen curled his lip and said indifferently. "But he certainly has the skills. No matter what sort of person he is, he cannot pose a threat to us at school. That does not stop me from learning from him."
After listening to Dumbledore teach all morning and going through that exchange just now, Xiwen was deeply impressed by him. He did not find Dumbledore nearly as bad as the pure-blood families had claimed.
Perhaps everyone had misunderstood him somehow, he thought.
By the time Xiwen finished eating, it was already half past twelve. Charms began at one o'clock, so it seemed it was time to head for the classroom again.
Next time, I have to bring all my books for the day! he thought irritably as he raced back toward the underground common room.
On the stairs, he ran into Abu and the other two hurrying upstairs.
"Quick, Xiwen, just take us straight to the classroom!" When Abu saw Xiwen, he hurriedly stopped him from continuing downward and said between gasps, "You never came back, so we brought your books!"
As he spoke, he pulled Xiwen's two textbooks from his bag and handed them over.
That saves me a trip, Xiwen thought happily as he accepted the books and placed them in the Pocket Watch Space.
Then he noticed six envious gazes shooting toward him from beside him.
"I'm writing to my father tonight and telling him to send me one," Abraxas said through gritted teeth. Mobley, beside him, voiced his agreement.
Only Gomez sighed somewhat dejectedly in the corner.
The four of them arrived at the Charms classroom on the fourth floor without incident.
Unlike the Transfiguration classroom, the desks and chairs in the Charms classroom were arranged lengthwise—four long tables stood along either side of the room, leaving ample space in the middle for casting spells. The two tables closer to the center were lower, while the two by the walls stood on raised stone steps. The young wizards sat behind the tables facing the center of the classroom so they could listen easily, while those in the back would not be blocked by the middle rows.
The professor who taught Charms was already waiting before the blackboard at the front of the classroom. He was an older wizard without a beard. His gray-white hair was still fairly thick, making him seem less aged than he was. He had a long hooked nose, high arched brows, and a somewhat roguish smile at the corners of his mouth.
When the bell rang, he walked to the center of the classroom and introduced himself. "Good afternoon, dear first-year students! I am your Charms professor this year—Adebe Woflin. I hope you will all enjoy your time in Charms over the coming days."
Seeing how kind the professor was, the young wizards all breathed a sigh of relief and smiled knowingly. Warm applause rang through the classroom.
As he applauded, Xiwen turned to Abraxas beside him and asked, "Our Charms professor is Adebe Woflin?"
Abu froze for a moment before asking doubtfully, "What is it? Is he famous?"
"Didn't you notice? Our textbook!" Xiwen opened Magical Theory on the desk and showed it to Abu. A name was clearly written on the title page—Adebe Woflin!
Abu's eyes widened. "So that means he is amazing?"
"Of course he is. The fundamental rules of magic were summarized by Professor Woflin." Before Xiwen could speak, a girl in blue-collared robes seated in front of them turned around and glared at them. "Also, the professor is about to begin teaching. Keep it down."
Abu was about to retort, but Xiwen tugged at him. Then he noticed Professor Woflin looking their way with an amused expression.
He could only let it go and glare fiercely at the back of the Ravenclaw girl's head...
Professor Woflin truly deserved his reputation as a master of magical theory capable of writing works renowned both at home and abroad. He made what should have been an incredibly dull lesson—the theoretical knowledge behind casting spells—exceptionally vivid. The young wizards listened with rapt attention and did not even realize class had ended.
"All right, that is all for today." Professor Woflin clapped his hands. "Go back and practice the wand movement for the Floating Charm. We will put it into practice next class!"
After Professor Woflin turned and left, Xiwen and the other three quickly packed their things and hurried out of the classroom, heading toward Herbology.
At that moment, Mobley abruptly asked, "Did we forget something?"
Abu said, "If you mean the break between Charms lessons, then the professor probably forgot..."
Whether Professor Woflin had truly forgotten or had done it to keep up with the lesson schedule, he had directly taken up the ten-minute break. Remembering that the professor had finished teaching right as the dismissal bell rang, Xiwen felt the latter was more likely.
He silently added, "I don't know whether the professor forgot, but I'd guess the Ravenclaws completely forgot."
Looking at the Ravenclaw young wizards, who had only just finished taking notes and were leaving the classroom laden with bags, Abu and the other two nodded in agreement.
First-year Herbology was held in Greenhouse One, and their Herbology professor was a young witch who looked to be under thirty.
Seeing the witch's somewhat dull eyes, Xiwen said with disappointment, "I thought Professor Birley would be teaching Herbology."
"What kind of treatment is that, having a head of department teach every one of your classes? If you ask me, that would only happen if some world-saving Chosen One came to study at the school. Then no matter how much the headmaster favored him, it would not be surprising. He might even arrange a special timetable for him." Abu curled his lip. "But that is impossible!"
Xiwen sighed regretfully. That was true. If one year had every subject taught by a head of department, what would students in the other years think? It would be grossly unfair to them!
However, Abraxas would never have imagined that his words would become prophecy many years later—
Fifty-four years later, a Chosen One truly appeared among one group of students. The headmaster personally changed the professors' teaching years for him, eventually creating the lavish arrangement of every house head teaching the same year of students!
And that group of students included his grandson...
