Background / History
In 1899, Dumbledore met Gellert Grindelwald in Godric's Hollow. The two gifted young wizards became exceptionally close, shared ambitions to overturn the Statute of Secrecy, and formed a Blood Pact preventing either from opposing the other. Dumbledore initially justified their planned revolution as a way to protect loved ones from Muggle cruelty and xenophobia, but later recognized that he had neglected his family and allowed ambition to override responsibility. Ariana's death ended their time together, while Dumbledore's guilt drove him into a prolonged search for the Resurrection Stone. 128 199 236
Around 1926, Dumbledore was a Hogwarts teaching-group member under Galatea Merrythought, teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts. He later transferred to Transfiguration—another field in which he excelled—and became Gryffindor's Head of House. 2
As a Transfiguration professor, Dumbledore quickly notices Xiwen Rozier's unusual mental strength and aptitude. He guides Xiwen's early studies, recommends Ancient Runes as the basis for alchemy, and agrees to instruct him in the subject. 17 51 Dumbledore also arranges for Xiwen to study under Nicolas Flamel, partly to protect Flamel from Grindelwald and partly because Xiwen's Rozier heritage made him a potential target Grindelwald would spare. He later admits to having used Xiwen as a piece in his broader strategy. 110 155
Unable to directly fight Grindelwald due to the Blood Pact, Dumbledore relies on allies, deception, and carefully distributed roles. He assembles an early force including Xiwen, Newt Scamander, Theseus Scamander, and Yusuf Kama to disrupt Grindelwald's plans in Berlin. 111 121 There, Dumbledore defeats Credence Barebone without permanently harming him, using a modified Mirror Dimension to exhaust and disarm him before revealing that Credence is Aurelius Dumbledore, Aberforth's son. 127 128
At the Bhutan election, the Blood Pact finally shatters after Grindelwald's attack is blocked by Dumbledore and Aberforth. Dumbledore rejects Grindelwald's emotional appeal, choosing to “grow old alone” rather than return to him. 135 He later reveals that his plan against Grindelwald depended on Kama infiltrating Nurmengard, Queenie reading Kama's deliberately exposed thoughts, Jacob serving as a distraction, and Bunty delivering the real Qilin case. 136
Dumbledore later risks his relationship with Aberforth to save Aurelius from the Obscurus consuming him. He has Aberforth knocked unconscious so the treatment can proceed, but Aurelius survives by merging with his Obscurus into a new full-form state. Soon afterward, a phoenix chooses Dumbledore and is named Fawkes. 157 160
He also attempts to steer Tom Riddle away from darkness. Concerned by Riddle's cruelty, theft, manipulation, and isolation within Slytherin, Dumbledore asks Xiwen to become Riddle's friend and guide him through kindness rather than prejudice over bloodline or Parseltongue. 143 144 164
When Death's threat emerges, Dumbledore helps organize the resistance, founds the Order of the Phoenix, and works with Xiwen, Flamel, and eventually Grindelwald against the Demon God. 238 318 He personally destroys an incarnation of Death during the battle at Hogwarts and later supports efforts to reinforce Death's seal. 251 257
Dumbledore declines formal political leadership despite his influence, believing himself unworthy of power because of his past ambitions. Instead, he helps remove Minister Hector Fawley, supports Leonard Spencer-Morn's succession, and entrusts Xiwen with uniting the pure-blood families. 258 259
Appearance
Dumbledore is a tall, thin wizard with brown or reddish-brown hair and beard, a slightly crooked nose, and sharp blue eyes described as wise and profound. By the later war period, gray-white streaks are visible in his beard. 16 159 300
- Usually wears a dark gray trench coat. 16
- Can alter his clothing through Transfiguration, once changing his trench coat into a purple robe decorated with golden stars. 171
- Nearing sixty during Aurelius's treatment, his face shows pronounced wrinkles when exhausted or distressed. 159
Personality
Dumbledore is genial, witty, and patient in the classroom. He calmly handles unprepared students, awards House points with playful arbitrariness, and uses humor even in tense situations. 16 130 He is also capable of compassion, particularly toward Credence, Aurelius, Newt, and Tom Riddle, consistently arguing that character matters more than ancestry or inherited abilities. 127 144 164
Beneath his warmth, Dumbledore is a calculating strategist willing to manipulate allies for the greater good. He admits that he arranged dangerous circumstances around both Newt and Xiwen, though he believes his actions were necessary to protect the Wizarding World. 110 155 His past with Grindelwald leaves him deeply distrustful of his own desire for authority, causing him to avoid positions such as Minister for Magic or President of the International Confederation of Wizards. 258
He rejects fatalism despite respecting genuine prophecy. To Dumbledore, prophecy should expand people's understanding of possible futures rather than dictate their choices. 214
