Background / History

The Campbell Lineage moved from Ireland to Scotland roughly two centuries before 1305 and established itself on the southern tip of the Argyll Peninsula. During King Haakon IV of Norway's invasion, John I Campbell funded and led a force in Scotland's victory at Largs. King Alexander III elevated him to baron and granted Allen Island to the family. 2

Under successive generations of Campbells, the island developed into a significant western Scottish trade center and a source of royal tax revenue. John II Campbell particularly expanded its commerce; at its height, the lineage owned three cog ships and the island possessed as many as ten substantial seagoing vessels. 2 3

English invasion, naval warfare, and the blockade of Scottish shipping gradually ruined this prosperity. By 1305, the Campbells retained their land and some wealth, but ships had been sunk or sold, population had fallen, and the island's lords continued costly campaigns in hopes of reopening the sea routes. 2 3

Geography

• The island is divided broadly between rugged northern mountains, dominated by Goat Fell, and gentler southern hills and plains. 26
• The Ethan River carries water from Lake David in the Goat Fell mountains to the sea; its sediment created the fertile coastal valley around Rocklanza Village. 1

Maritime Trade

In 1305, Baron John mobilizes more than a hundred knights, sergeants, levies, and sailors—an exceptionally heavy levy for an island with fewer than 2,000 people. 3

The expedition later suffers a catastrophic defeat in Galloway. More than half its members are lost, much of its equipment and shipping is destroyed or captured, and only one major cog returns to Allen Island. 40 42 46

Story Role / Major Arcs

Roger's Return and Island Reputation

Allen Island is the setting of Roger's return in July 1305. Its residents recognize him as a feared and notorious member of Sir Colin's household, associating his return with renewed disorder. 1

Pirate Crisis

With Baron John's forces away, Ulf's pirate band occupies an abandoned mill near Rocklanza Village and threatens the poorly defended island. Roger kills Ulf at the Red Mill, recruits islanders in Brodick, and leads an improvised force against the pirate lair. 12 13 21 28

The pirate force is destroyed, and Roger claims its ship, weapons, armor, and treasure. His victory shifts his standing among the islanders, though it also intensifies his conflict with White-faced John over the spoils. 33 34 36

Aftermath of the Galloway Defeat

The island becomes a place of mass mourning after Baron John's army returns shattered from Galloway. Sir Colin and Colin II are killed, wounded soldiers fill Brodick Castle, and Roger becomes head of the Colin household. 40 42

Roger's Inheritance

Following Sir Colin's death, Roger receives the right to inherit Milkhouse Manor but must surrender weapons and armor as an “inheritance tax.” He is knighted at Brodick Castle on August 15, 1305, becoming lord of Milkhouse Manor. 46 48
