Background / History

Earl Haraldson was one of Baldhead's fellow street thugs in Lamlash. Though introduced as someone who “can really fight,” he is repeatedly bruised and readily bullied; his Viking lineage and combat reputation are treated skeptically. Before meeting Roger, he briefly joined Ulf's pirate crew, but was driven out after only a few days. That experience gave him knowledge of the pirate leaders, their hideout, and their internal rivalry. 7 12 14

When Ulf's men appeared at the Red Mill, Ponytail was the first among Roger's companions to act, threatening the pirate lackeys with a stool. After Ulf's death, he took black boots, a wool cloak, and a dagger from the body, then received a share of the remaining loot. 13

Ponytail initially proposed appeasing the pirates and fleeing the island, but his knowledge of Sea Monster's ambition and conflict with the Third Chief gave Roger a basis for a counterplan. Moved by Roger calling him a “brother,” he accepted the dangerous task of infiltrating the pirate den. 14 15

He entered the abandoned mill in ragged clothing, endured beatings and interrogation, and convinced the pirates that the Colin family and White-faced John had arranged Ulf's death. While maintaining his cover, he spread suspicion between Sea Monster and the Third Chief. 19 20 22

Using the poison supplied by Roger, Ponytail contaminated the pirates' cooking water and drinking vessels. He was attacked before finishing the operation, breaking part of the poison vial, but enough poison took effect to throw the mill into chaos. He then set fire around the mill; overwhelmed by the day's abuse, he forgot to give Roger the planned signal and briefly lost control before hiding under a table. 27 29

During Roger's raid, Ponytail protected a young pirate lackey from execution and helped treat Blackhide Dog's wound. Roger credited him with the greatest merit in the pirate operation, placing him in the first reward rank alongside Baldhead and Blackhide Dog. 30 34 35

After the victory, Ponytail helped guard captives, worked at the Holy Island saltworks, and became a guard of Milkhouse Manor. He accompanied Roger to his knighting ceremony equipped as a manor guard rather than a street thug. 39 41 44 47 48

Appearance

Ponytail is a well-proportioned man whose most recognizable feature is the short braid from which he receives his nickname. His face is frequently bruised from beatings, especially during his infiltration of the pirates. 7 19

Ponytail is initially cowardly, status-conscious, and prone to embellishing his past. He tries to present a chicken-thieving injury as a heroic knife scar and first suggests surrendering to the pirates rather than fighting them. 14

Despite this, he proves resourceful under pressure. He can convincingly perform fear, desperation, and subservience to deceive dangerous opponents, while quietly pursuing Roger's plan. He also remains sensitive to kindness: Roger's brotherly treatment earns his fierce loyalty, while the Third Chief's earlier decency leaves him conflicted during Olaf's interrogation. 14 19 32

Ponytail's courage is practical rather than fearless. He expects beatings as part of the infiltration, suffers them without abandoning the mission, and carries out the poisoning despite believing the operation has many chances to fail. 15 27
