After returning to Earth, he had contacted Tony and Steve, gathered all the Avengers members, and explained the general situation and plan.

Early the next morning, he brought all the prepared Avengers to Knowhere through a Portal, then gathered the Guardians of the Galaxy for a meeting as well.

Now that the meeting was over, there was still a day before the battle began, so he simply let everyone go explore on their own first.
