Background / History
Tony publicly revealed that he was Iron Man shortly before Jerry Carmen recognized the world as the Marvel Universe. At the time, the damaged Mark III armor had been replaced by the Mark IV, while Tony was developing the suitcase-sized Mark V for emergencies. 1 16
During the Queens school-bus hijacking, Tony used Jarvis to analyze surveillance footage, locate the robbers' warehouse, and rescue Jerry, the final hostage. He promised Jerry an Iron Man model and had Pepper Potts send a life-sized Mark IV model to the Carmen household the following day. 17 22
Appearance
Tony is most often seen in his armored Iron Man suits, particularly the red-and-gold Mark IV. Outside combat, he has appeared in formal clothing with a suit and sunglasses. 16 132 357
- Mark IV Armor — replaced the battle-damaged Mark III and retained nearly identical functions with minor visual adjustments. 16
- Red-and-gold armor — his entrance at the Hammer Industries exhibition immediately eclipsed the displayed combat robots. 132
- Portable armor systems — later armor designs could convert into a suitcase or assemble remotely onto his body. 167 285
Personality
Tony is proud of both his inventions and public image. Jerry's repeated reminders about the promised model bruised his pride, while his first reaction to magic was disbelief because of his technological worldview. 18 107
He is sarcastic and often flippant, but consistently acts when lives are at stake. He tracked down the bus hostages, chose to confront Aldrich Killian rather than immediately rescue Rhodes when Killian posed the larger threat, and delayed Ultron so civilians could be evacuated. 17 290 458
Tony values repaying favors. After Jerry saved him from palladium poisoning and repeatedly aided him in battle, Tony readily helped Jerry secure a Stark Industries internship and created specialized technology at Jerry's request. 108 356 602
