Before being kidnapped, Tony had been an annoying playboy. Stephen had been an arrogant surgeon, and Banner had been a scientist. When they knew they could not defeat an enemy, they would wisely choose to run away.
They could also become depressed, give up, develop psychological problems, and so on for various reasons.
But Steve was different. Before becoming a Super Hero, he had been a sickly weakling, yet whenever he faced injustice, he would always be the first to step forward, even if his opponents were several burly men he could never defeat.
And no matter how many times he was knocked down, he would get back up through sheer willpower, until he was truly beaten to death.
When faced with a grenade thrown before him, even knowing it meant certain death, he would still throw himself over it and use his body to cover it, preventing the explosion from hurting anyone else.
After emerging from decades of being frozen, all his family and friends were gone. His only lover had married someone else, grown old and frail, and perhaps even died, yet he remained just as strong.
So to Steve, Thanos' Army in the sky was no different from the thugs who had cornered him in an alley all those years ago. Both were equally unbeatable, and both had to be defeated.
No matter how many times he fell, as long as he was alive, he would stand back up and fight.
