Background

Nawaki graduated from the Academy alongside Hyuga Tianyi and later reunited with him at the Land of Rain frontline. Through an arrangement involving Orochimaru, Tianyi was assigned to Nawaki’s Leaf Blade Squad as its medical-support and reconnaissance specialist. Nawaki enthusiastically welcomed his former classmate and envisioned the squad as a force that would undertake increasingly important missions for the village. 19 20

As the eldest direct grandson of the Senju Clan and the First Hokage’s grandson, Nawaki is regarded by Konoha’s leadership as a valuable prospect. Danzō identifies him as one of two individuals with the potential to awaken Wood Release, while Hiruzen believes battlefield experience is necessary for his growth. 19

During the war, Nawaki’s former peer Tianyi rapidly became a renowned elite shinobi, leaving Nawaki unsettled by the widening difference between their abilities. Rather than withdrawing, Nawaki sought to confront that disparity directly through another challenge, hoping to confirm Tianyi’s reputed strength and improve himself through the experience. 146 147

His enthusiasm can become recklessness. He initially proposes a frontal assault against the Rain outpost, exposes himself after launching a Wind Release attack, and later overcommits during his spar with Tianyi. Tsunade repeatedly criticizes his lack of tactical restraint and teamwork. 23 26 50

Although he remains prideful and prone to emotional reactions after defeat, Nawaki possesses determination and resilience. First Battle at the Rain Outpost

Under Orochimaru’s supervision, Nawaki joins Tianyi and Kaede in an operation to eliminate a Hidden Rain outpost. He initially favors a frontal attack but accepts Tianyi’s infiltration plan. During the battle, his Wind Release destroys the sentry post but alerts the defenders; he is pierced through the arm and chest, kicked away, and left severely injured. 23 24 25

Tianyi and Kaede cover Nawaki’s retreat while Tianyi remains behind to defeat the surviving enemies. Nawaki later feels guilty after seeing Tianyi’s condition and receiving Tsunade’s reprimand. 25 26

Poison Mist Assault

When Hanzo’s Salamander fills the battlefield with poison mist, Nawaki and Kaede follow Tianyi’s orders to evacuate wounded shinobi and protect the Medical Corps. Nawaki provides Tianyi with all seven of his remaining Explosive Tags before Tianyi infiltrates the enemy position. 37

After the battle, Nawaki proudly recounts Tianyi’s achievements and celebrates the recognition of Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru as the Three Sannin. 40

Orochimaru’s Training and Spar with Tianyi

Nawaki undergoes special training from Orochimaru focused on Earth Release and taijutsu. 47

He later spars Tianyi using Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique, Wind Release, and Hidden Shadow Snake Hands. Although he initially gains the apparent advantage, Tianyi defeats him through a Shadow Clone, Hidden Mist Technique, and a Gentle Fist touch to his exposed back. 50

Renewed Challenge Against Tianyi

After hearing of Tianyi’s wartime achievements, Nawaki challenges him at the Senju Clan training ground to determine how much his former teammate has changed. He opens aggressively with shuriken, a Shadow Clone, and a destructive Wind–Fire Release combination, but Tianyi evades through Earth Dragon Hide Technique and exposes Nawaki’s concealment with the Byakugan. 146

When Nawaki demands that Tianyi stop holding back, Tianyi releases killing intent that freezes him in place. Nawaki resists the psychological pressure, demonstrating the resilience gained from Orochimaru’s training, but remains unable to overcome the difference in combat experience. 146

Tianyi then turns Nawaki’s discarded shuriken against him with Magnet Release before using the Flying Thunder God Technique to mark more than a dozen of Nawaki’s vital points with red dye in under two seconds. The marks demonstrate that Nawaki would have been killed repeatedly in a genuine fight, leaving him humiliated and furious but also forced to recognize Tianyi’s overwhelming superiority. 147

Mito Uzumaki’s Final Farewell

Nawaki and Tsunade accompany their grandmother, Mito Uzumaki, when she prepares to transfer the Nine-Tails to Kushina. Nawaki attempts to remain composed but is visibly overwhelmed by grief. Mito comforts him before he and Tsunade are escorted away from the sealing altar for their safety. 159
