Background

Ashura Maru is the demon-blade template inhabited by Lin Fan. He grows through Demon Power and Emotion Points, which he obtains from slain enemies and intense emotional reactions. Although initially bound to Tanjiro's blade, he can recover strength through time or the malice of demons slain with his power. Tanjiro was identified as his blade master, though Ashura Maru allowed others to wield him with Tanjiro's approval. 4 6

During his first world, Ashura Maru and Tanjiro cleared Mount Fujikasane of demons, enabling Ashura Maru to condense an avatar. He became a decisive advantage for the Demon Slayer Corps through healing, tactical guidance, Demonification, and eventually independent combat. 5 36 54

After Tanjiro reached the limit of power supported by the Demon Slayer world, Ashura Maru remained at his side through Tanjiro's marriage, old age, and death. He created a mental world filled with Tanjiro's loved ones so that Tanjiro could die peacefully, buried him beside his companions, left a blade clone to guard the grave, and began traveling across worlds. 78

Personality

Ashura Maru is blunt, arrogant, and easily irritated by needless questions, mistaken assumptions about his gender, or perceived incompetence. He often speaks harshly to his wielders, threatens to take over if their resolve fails, and treats intense negative emotion as a useful resource. 6 84 123

He is also highly calculating. Ashura Maru manipulates opponents into producing Emotion Points, withholds information when it benefits his plans, and has deliberately feigned weakness to lure stronger enemies into action. 57 69 112

Despite his harsh manner, Ashura Maru becomes deeply attached to wielders who demonstrate conviction. He treated Tanjiro as an equal rather than property, protected Yuji from collapse after possession, and openly defended Naruto when the Death God attacked him. 61 105 192
